: 91/92 tranny compatibilities
llaprad1 05-11-2002, 12:46 PM I've done intensive searches of the list and the forum, and I need a bottom line (and some aspirin)...
What tranny options are ther for a 91/91 SE-R? From my understanding, the tach is mechanical, so a 93+ tranny wont work.
Am I missing something? What else will work for a 91/92 tranny replacement?
playatx99 05-11-2002, 03:51 PM Louis, any tranny from 91-97 will work for you, but for a 93+ you will have to swap your mechanical speedo pickup for the electronic that they come with. I have a '93 tranny in my '91(although it has 5th gear pop out now:mad: )
eric96ser 05-11-2002, 05:19 PM Luis, if you are wanting to fix your tranny, I think I can get one for $400. You can also get the parts to fix 5th gear for $250. Fixing it is easy. I'll make some calls Monday morning.
llaprad1 05-12-2002, 04:17 AM So fixing it is easy? I thought I remember reading (it was a few years ago, though) that the fix was complex and the parts were as much as a tranny itself (used, of course).
I was also intimidated by the Haynes manual which totally omits a tranny section and instead (in bold) warns that a tranny rebuild is not easy.
If you say its easy, though, Im all ears.

Funny tangent... my dad asked me to test drive a 92 SE-R with him to look out for things. We get on the interstate and he tells me, "You know, you can put it in 5th." I totally forgot 5th gear existed!
It was sooo nice.
Furthermore, the rest of the car was so tight, mechanically. The interior was super-clean. The engine was replaced by the dealer, and it pulled well, without any signs of low or intermittent oil pressure, clatter, or knock.
Sunroof, cruise, and dealer-installed Nissan CD player (Ive never seen one in an early-90 Sentra before!). Repainted badly, but, eh.
Long story short, he put $100 down to deliver on Monday.
So, if youre keeping score, I have a red 91, my bro. has a white 91 (soon with a Primera engine), and my dad will now have a black 92.
Now I feel guilty about sucking my family into the sickness...
eric96ser 05-12-2002, 12:41 PM The Haynes manual skips that part, but the FSM doesn't. I was scared of the tranny, until I fixed the one in my sister's '91. It took me and a few friends(more watched than helped)1 day to drop one tranny, swap 5th gear parts over to another, and install the new one. No air tools, no lift.
eric96ser 05-14-2002, 10:02 AM I can get you a '92 tranny with 60k miles for $450. Courtesy sells the parts to fix 5th gear for $297.75 (http://www.courtesyparts.com/b13/oe_5th-gear.html). Let me know what you want to do.
llaprad1 05-14-2002, 11:20 AM Do you remember if people had experience with fixing the tranny. I'm concerned whether the fix is relatively permanent or not.
Otherwise I may be down for the tranny @ $450. I'll have to check me monies.
eric96ser 05-14-2002, 11:37 AM The new parts are stronger than the old ones. I have pictures at home of the differences. I think the fix is a permanent one. The bad thing about a used tranny, is the unknown history with it.
enjoyDride 05-14-2002, 02:26 PM eric96ser-have you ever swapped all the internals of one tranny to another? If so what special tools are needed?
eric96ser 05-14-2002, 02:55 PM Just some snap ring pliers and a FSM. :)

Yeah, and having entrusted my own daring to do all my previous work myself, I just may embark on my tranny with new parts.
This being my daily driver, though, I got to wait for a nice, healthy no-plans weekend and some dough.
eric96ser 05-14-2002, 05:24 PM I'll help you out. It's not I haven't done that before :)
eric96ser 05-15-2002, 11:04 PM Here's the differences in the 5th gears. The new one is on the right:
http://www.sr20deforum.com/eric/misc/5th%20gears.JPG
The new one has a space between the gear part and where the slider locks the gear in place.
cossieturbo 05-16-2002, 02:05 AM Replacing 5th gear with the update is important, but don't overlook this....
One of the other main issues with 5th gear pop out is the 5th gear snap ring. "REPLACE IT"!!!!! I cryoed my new one (yes, I overkill). This ring (I have seen this a lot) gets compressed over time and can break. This lets the 5th gear synchro hub (pressed on part) start slipping off of the input shaft thus letting 5th gear slide around. If you use the old ring, your shooting yourself in the foot. I have done a few of these tranys and this is very important. Best of all, it's cheap. There are 7 thickness sizes (2.00, in 0.05 increments, to 2.30). I just ordered 3 of them (Nissan part #s 32311-m8813(2.05mm), 32311-m8815(2.15mm), 32311-m8817(2.25mm)) and used the one that fit the best. Can't really mike the old one as it gets thinner due to the crushing. Not a hard job to do though once the trany is out. Good luck bloke.
NOTE: Pony up the bucks and get a Factory Shop Manual. It pays for its self in no time. Saw one on e-bay once.
