: Axle seals?

As you may have noticed, I have to do the axles on my car. Should I replace the axle seals? I will assume yes. If so, does anyone have the part numbers that I need and the approximate costs? It's a manual tranny without ABS.

Thanks!

. . and do it right. Last year, I did not. Besides having to redo the axle, I had to clean up the gear oil mess that went halfway to the rear bumper.

I have NEVER changed axle seals on my 98SE or 93NX and I have never had a leaking problem. I have had axles in and out at least 20 times between these two cars and never a drop. YMMV

You should replace the seals when replacing the axles. They are cheap.

You have sold me on changin them. Now, how do you do it? How do you get them out, and how do you get them in? I have heard they are a paint to get back in.

Can someone give me a step-by-step description?

Thanks!

I already have the axles out. I can see the seals, and am just rying to see if there is anything special that I need to know. Or, do I just pull them out with my fingers. Then take the new ones and put some grease on the outside and slide them in? I have to imagine that once you put the new one in that you will need to pursuade it a bit. I am not sure how to do that.....ideas?

Thanks!

If you can take them out with you fingers, great! But you will probably need something to pry them out. I used a little pry tool I got from the auto store.

Be careful not to scrape up the sealing surface. Use a block of wood and hammer to install the new seals. The block of wood will help apply pressure evenly around the seal while you press it in.

Make sure the seal is FLUSH with the tranny case, not recessed. If you push in the seal too far, it will leak.

Thanks for that info. on the install of the seals. I will be attempting all of this on Sunday afternoon, I hope.

More to come.
