Hey Guys,
I've just imported a 180SX and am having a few teething problems. You can read about them here:
http://www.sr20forum.com/showthread.php?t=181469
It turns out the car was missing an air filter when it arrived an now the engine is completely flooded. I stuck on a filter from another 180 and took out the plugs and dried 'em off (petrol was everywhere, you could smell it a mile off). Car started and ran on idle but once you hit the accelerator it would cut out.
I'm gonna put some new iridium plugs on her during the week & hopefully that will be it. Should I change the oil too as somebody has suggested? Also while I'm at it, I don't know when the timing belt was last done in Japan so I may get that one outta the way also. I can feel my pocket cringing already!
What's your opinions on my situation?
Thanks Guys.

Put on the new plugs today and boy what smoke when I started that engine and I mean SMOKE!!
I let the car run for a while & took it for a drive but it's still smokin' alot. Gonna run some tests on the engine tomorrow to see if the tubo is gone, fingers crossed.
Does anybody have any ideas as to why the smoke??

Started out as black as coal:eek2:
I would say that right now it is somewhere between black & white.
I also noticed that there appeared to be too much oil when I dipped for it so I drained a little under a litre off & dipped it again and it was between min & max settings on the dipstick.
Any thoughts?

turbo SR20= CHANGE THE OIL! Just to be safe, ALSO, cap, rotor, plugs & wires, replace the O2 sensor & since you're there, you might as well reground teh MAF sensor. You said that when you hit the accelerator, it shut off? Just check to see the ground is clear. I'd change the oil and filter BEFORE I ran that turbo to hard just to see. if the oil is dark and nasty, the car might not have been taken care of very well, so the turbo might be bad. Cross your fingers and hope it's not. Good luck.

Does the oil smell gassy? You may have a stuck injector, or other issue that's causing excess fuel, which could be mixing with your oil and causing the level to rise.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for your replies. The oil was very clean when I dipped so no worries there (didn't smell it to see was it gassy). Will smell it to see though, although I don't think there's any fuel mixing with it.
Plugs have been replaced aswell so I'm getting the turbo checked tomorrow to see if that shows up okay. If it does (and I do hope so) do you guys reckon the smoke should drive itself outta the car after some everyday driving?

dosent the 180sx have the ca18det?
anyway id do a leak down pressure test on the coolent and fuel and do a compression test on the cylinders.

No dude, the JDM has the sr20det:biggthump
Compression test showed up all clear, gonna get the turbo checked out to see if it's on it's last legs & maybe install a new one. If the turbo was on the way out could that be the source of all the smoke?

The shaft in the turbo is moveable by hand i.e. there is a bit of play there, it can be moved from side to side, a good deal more than that of a new turbo.
Is this a sign that the turbo is on the way out?

i dunno from what i *** black or blueish smoke has to do with the oil. but i guess it could be that the turbo is going out..... i forgot what white smoke is... water or coolent getting in the system maybe???
