: Back to open airbox and 19* timing on my 98SE
And she's not to damned bad! I forgot she could be ok NA. I had her up for sale for so long with full airbox and 15* timing that I forgot what happens when you open her up a little. The car dynoed with this same setup like 2 years ago at 129hp and 124ft-lbs, which is pretty damned good for a stock 98 with free mods. I am happy for the moment :)
Stiletto 05-15-2002, 08:01 PM you got 129 hp w/ open airbox and 19* timing?!! DAMN!! that's impressive. are you sure you don't have cams? ;)
Dug up my old dyno chart:

:D
martin_g34 05-15-2002, 10:42 PM That's actually really impressive. My car dynoed at 128 with POP, 2 pulley set and 17 degrees timing. And most people were actually impressed by that a bit. That's cool that you got those kind of numbers with just free mods.

B_baker03 06-11-2002, 12:32 PM How do I adjust the timing like you guys are talking about. The only way I know of is with aftermarket timing gears, but it sounds like Ben92SentraSE-R is saying that theses are all free mods?
Adjust the base iginition timing, not the cam timing. Takes all of 10 minutes to do. Come down to one of my geekouts listed in the Midwest forum and we could do it for you easily.
akapaul 06-19-2002, 11:14 AM with the advanced timing, what kind of gas did u put in that se before u sold it?
87 octane. Some people say you need premium for advanced timing. From my experience on our cars my recommendation is to stick with 87 unless you have a JWT ECU or SAFC or some other or additional engine control device.
akapaul 06-19-2002, 12:29 PM yea, actually thinking of it, theres no reason to put in the premium gas even with the advanced timing... good thought
after advancing the timing, did u feel any differences as to acceleration or mpg?

My 98 SE pinged like crazy on the 87 stuff with 17 degree's of advance. YMMV.
Odd. I've ran 19-20 on my 98 SE, my 93 NX, and now my 92 SE-R with nothing but goodness. I've ONLY heard an SR20 ping when I played with a toilet valve boost controller on my 98 SE and could hear it only above 12PSI. That's it. YMMV etc etc

I have a sneaking suspicion that one persons 15 might be another 17 might be my 19. Just and idea. It would'nt be that far out of spec for Nissan to shoot for every car being a 15 but some are actually 13 and others are 17. Production tolerances varying and all.
