Hey guys, this is my first post.

I don't actually have my car yet, but I'm buying it real soon. Its a 98 SE-R.

I know a guy who has a SR20DET in an S14, and he is upgrading his setup in a few months. This is what he said

since my turbo is a ball bearing so it will cost about 1g for the turbo, manifold and turbo outlet extension pipe. the sr will be limited to about 5psi cause the stock injectors are 270cc.

Does that sound right? (I live in Canada, so 1grand =(approx) $600+

What else would I need to boost safely? And how much would it cost?

How much gain could I expect with a 5psi boost?

If these sound like dumb questions, its because I really don't know much about how turbo's work exactly. I'm gonna go do some reading now, but in the meantime, thanks!

Another question I forgot!

I am very worried about reliability, I'm going through university right now and don't have much money to put up for repairs and such. What are common problems associated with having a turbo? Would the turbo itself be damaged, so that I could just remove everything and return the motor to stock and be able to run? Or are other parts damaged which can ruin the engine?

thanks

You can boost more than 5psi, just be careful. Upgrade the fuel pump, get a regulator, and/or injectors and you can push it up.

As for problems, boost creates a lot of pressure and heat to an engine. Just take your time and make sure you have enough fuel to match the air content and you'll be fine.

With the turbo and manifold, you will also need an intercooler, oil lines, ecu, downpipe, and all intake piping.

It'll cost you way more than $1000 cdn. Where in Canada are you from?? I just bought a DET in Toronto for $1500 cdn. Why don't you go that route??

Also, the S14 DET setup is different from a FWD DET setup. I'm not sure about the turbo configuration itself, but the exhaust manifold is *probably* different, and the wastegate is remote, instead of internal on a FWD DET. I'd personally go with things that you absolutely know will fit.
