I was planning on getting a variable intake muffler from a 2001 G20 to replace the regular muffler on my '95 G20. Has anyone ever tried this? Would this be a good idea?

I will go ahead and weigh in here, although not with a direct answer to your questions. First of all, no, I have not tried this. Would it be a good idea? I guess it depends on what you are trying to achieve. I'm assuming that you are trying to accomplish one or several of the following:

(a.) simply replacing a worn out muffler
(b.) hoping to improve performance while maintaining a stock db level
(c.) aesthetics - looks better

I am not familiar with either model G20. But I am considering something similiar on my '94 SE-R. Issues that I have come up against when looking at other factory mufflers to replace the big ol' stock can on my car:

Is the inlet positioned correctly?
Do the dimensions of the possible replacement fit in the space available?
Are the inlet and outlet(s) sizes equal to or greater than the original muffler so as to improve flow, not restrict it?
If these criteria are met, I don't see any reason that it would not work, although you will probably need to have the hangers altered or new ones fabricated.

As an aside, there is another thread currently ongoing that discusses dual exhaust systems, and Stilletto posted a reply which showed a cutaway picture of the type of muffler I believe you are referring to. Check out his post on this link:

If you go for it, let us know how it turns out...and if you are not happy with it, you can always move in a different direction :) .

Good luck, Gary S.

It sounds like a waste of time and money to me, unless your stock muffler is toast.

Yeah, I read the thread but I'd figure that I still give it a try. I got a guy selling me his variable capacity muffler for $55, so I don't really see it as a big gamble. Like you said, my three main goals are:

(a.) simply replacing a worn out muffler
(b.) hoping to improve performance while maintaining a stock db level
(c.) aesthetics - looks better

If it doesn't work, then I'll just trash it and get a Remus muffler. :D
