: 155k miles too much??

Hi, hope to own a SR20 powered car soon....

looking at a 93 SE-R, good condition but has 155k miles.
I'm not a hardcore racer, but I plan on having some track time occasionally..

will it hold up and what should I look for? my friend said it might need new ball joints, and there's an oil leak underneath, said it shouldn't be so bad, except we may need to rent tools.

also, why does it seem like there's a craze for the NX2000? just skimmed quite a bit of threads but didn't see what makes it so special to some people... can someone enlighten me? thanks

I have about 174k miles on my 91 SER. I've been road racing and autocrossing it since I bought it at 110k miles.

Check for 5th gear popout and leaking head gasket. Can't overheat these engines.

Ray Kawski has a Classic with over 300k miles on it, and it runs fine. Carlos Gutierrez has over 200k on his '91 SE-R, and I believe it sees regular track lapping. There are probably others in a similar situation.

The one critical element of the SR20's longevity is regular oil changes. Sludged oil passages and low oil from neglect will toast the bearings faster than in some cars. Mileage isn't a big problem if the car was properly maintained.

Worst case, we have access to fairly inexpensive imported Japanese-spec SR20DEs from the Nissan Primera. Some places run less than $600, IIRC. If you spin a bearing or put a hole in the block with a missed shift, replacement SR's are no big deal and are usually cheaper than replacing some pricey part on the original engine.

As for the NXes, I don't get it, either. ;)

I've got 184K on mine and drive the hell out of it every time I'm in it. I bought it new, changed the oil every 3K, and just follow a good maintenence schedule. I replaced the original exhaust two months ago and still have the original clutch. It's never broken down. Long story short- don't worry about the mileage as long as you can verify proper maintenence.

Just 151k miles of island driving. Same island where 808se-r may be? Don't know how many SE-Rs there are out here that have as many miles as mine, not to mention one that is 2 years younger. Really, there is nowhere to go but in circles here.

As an owner of an nx2000 i know exactly what is so special about them.....You really have to own one to know. Besides being the best looking sr20's (flame suit on) and having amazing handling, they have t-tops!!! :D

I agree, on the NX I love having the T-Tops. I also like the hatchback a little better due to the fact that I still do love my car audio. It doesn't take much to make it sound GREAT in regards to weight or amount of equipment. One ten inch sub fiberglassed into the spare tire well and some good birch wood for the top and you have less weight the the spare tire was.

Also, don't get me wrong though, I do LOVE a Classic. They look DAMN good with a different wing and some springs. No real need for ground fx on them to enhance the appearence. The NX in that respect looks better with some kind of lower front peice as the factory one is kinda dull.:)

well, the deal fell through anyway.. so my search continues..

about the NX, I did ride in one.. it does feel like it handles a bit better, the hatch is a plus too, but the front end is .........
Someone is selling one with 130k for $1000 here.. there is some minor damage I was told, and a new passenger headlight is needed. I'll be checking this one out soon.

I'll also be looking over this car for SR20Sleeper who is moving to the islands. Luckily I know what to look for in this car in regards to typical problem areas and due to my knowledge of the way the owner drove in his youth.

If you (800se-r) buy it first, I hope you enjoy you at much as I have enjoyed mine for the past 11 + years.

Well it all depends on the price and condition of the car. I just picked up a 92 SE-R for a mere $1200. It had 134K on it. It has AC/CC/Sunroof and they all work. It has a badly slipping clutch that I can easily fix and a busted CV boot. The paint has a few minor rust spots that I fixed with touch up paint. This will be the second race car that I will build to ITS rules :D

the front passenger side was smashed in.. owner said he pounded out the bumper and hood, but the headlight needs to be replaced.. haven't found an NX in the junkyards yet.. so I'm not sure how much that would cost...

i don't plan on looking at the car until at least friday...

hawaii_se-r.. if you spot a classic, share the info :)

Dued, my 92 Classic does not have a major accident on it. It has some minor dents and I was able to get it for $1200. Keep looking, you will find a cheap one. I cannot wait to put the new clutch in and get it running at full power :D
