: Help with Exhaust Choice
98sr20ve 05-18-2002, 02:27 PM I am considering a custom exhaust for my B14 which is soon to be powered by an approximately 220hp VE. I use my car as a daily driver. I have done a thorough search of the forum but still have some questions. First, here is my plan. 14 inches stainless Magnaflow round muffler, 2.5-inch mandrel tubing, un-decided on the resonator but figure a 24 inch or so size. I need help with the muffler and resonator. Magnaflow has several round mufflers with the 2.5-inch in/out. They offer it in 4/6/7 inch round sizes. Would bigger be better for noise suppression? Also, I was considering a Dynomax "Bullet" resonator, but know little about this area. Also, Is there any advantage with noise suppression going with an oval muffler (shaped like OEM) over the round one I picked?
If you respond to this with "Magnaflow is XXX" please state the complete system it was attached to, including cat/resonator/muffler otherwise it is of very little value because an exhaust is a system not just one part.
I really want an exhaust that is quite but has good flow. Other recommendation on parts welcome.
Or I could just get a Greddy/Stromung???
A link to the magnaflow site is here (http://www.magnaflow.com/03cat-back/03ss/03stainlesssteelround.htm)
Thanks
Steve
se-r sam 05-18-2002, 02:59 PM I just put a Greddy SP on my 92 last weekend. It is quieter than my intake. From idle to redline! Too quiet for my taste actually. I had a custom 2.25 exhaust with a Tsudo predator muffler that was a lot louder. The bigger the muffler, the more sound supression material they can fit in it. Which means a quieter exhaust.
CNibbana 05-18-2002, 03:25 PM I have a Greddy SP I just bought used I can sell you.
I cut off the enormous tip, had a standard 2 1/2" tip welded on and then sent the whole thing to Jet Hot Coatings to be coated. It has a 3 year warranty and absolutlely no rust.
$300
I also have a Random Technology cat that is brand new and I had it Jet Hot Coated also. It has a lifetime warranty against rust (from Jet Hot not Random) They cost $225 new plus $75 for coating. I can tell you from experience the standard Random Cat wil rust.
$200
I'm in no rush to sell these things but though I might offer since you are looking for a new exhaust.

SR20RACER 05-18-2002, 04:45 PM I bought a Stromung 2.25 cat back and even though it took 5 weeks to get the complete stytem I do like it. I went with the dual 3" tips with no resonator and it looks and sounds great. It has a deep throaty tone but is pretty quiet compared to most aftermarkets. If you want pics or have specific questions PM me.
SERprise In WV 05-18-2002, 05:09 PM Steve--
For a NA car (even a screamin' VE), 2.25 or 2.5" exhaust will be more than adequate, IMHO.
As for the Dynmax stuff, I just installed a 3" setup on my turbo '93, so their product line is still fresh in my brain. A 14" long can will be louder than a 16" can, which is what I put on my car (muffler # 17296, IIRC). I went with the stainless, 6" round, 16" can, 20" overall length muffler.
As for the resonator, I used the Dynomax Race Bullet muffler as a resonator as well. 20" length, IIRC on that one.
Granted, I have that turbo to quiet down the exhaust pulses, but can tell you that the combination listed above makes a nice, deep burbling sound. Not loud by any stretch of the imagination. The drone that is common to SR20s with ES motor mounts is significantly reduced as well.
Hope this helps.
Storm88000 05-18-2002, 05:21 PM I did the Pacesetter method. I bought a Pacesetter 2.25" cat-back (mandrel bent pipes) for the 95-97 SE-R, I had the muffler cut off but used the piping. The Pacesetter muffler kinda sucks. So then I had a dynomax muffler welded on in place. It sounds pretty decent.

Your thread is one of the many I read that led me down this path. I measured my OEM B14 muffler at 14 inches. I guess I could try and stuff a 16 inch one in the hole. Magnaflow seems to use the 14 and 18 inch size not a 16 inch muffler.
Steve
jacen99SE 05-19-2002, 07:23 PM I have a longer muffler than that on my B14.
Courtesy B-pipe (with its own resonator).
2.5" stainless Dynomax Ultra-Flo, 19" long can (I think the website now lists this muffler as a 20" can).
Crappy Pilot Motorsports resonated tip.
I can send you some pics. I wrote a long thread about the install with pictures right before the server crash and some dude erased the backup... I didn't bother to write it up again.
NismoPC just put an 18" long Magnaflow can on his G20 (# 14255)
I happen to think my exhaust is quiet, for being 2.5" straight through. Having an extra-long cat probably doesn;t hurt!
I have no droning. It is deep and rumbly at idle, but shuts up above 2000rpm.
The longer and larger can you can get, the quieter it will be.
I don't know how to compare a 14" long 7"round muffler to a 14" long 5x8" muffler (cross sectional area?). Just pick the one that fits better, I guess.

Just talked to a local forum member who recomends a shop that uses magnaflow all the time. Maybe I was being to conserative on that rear muffler size. I will take it to them and see what size they say will fit. I think I will also go for the more tradtional oval muffler. More sleeper'ish. I would love to see the picks of your exhaust.

geeio 05-20-2002, 10:08 AM i have a magnaflow oval can on my nx with a side in and middle out it looks nice with a 3 inch tip not too big but its really loud i didnt get a resonator but im considering one but i do knotice that my exaust sounds a lot better tone wize than my friends 240 with an aerospeed muffler its deep and open throttle it sounds racey like an old 260z that i once drived

Yup! I decided to go with the 18" Magnaflow SS #14255 2.25" offset/center just as jacen99SE stated so that all three factory hangers could be used. Purchased it from www.bigexhaust.com for only $71.40 + shipping.
And it is quiet as hell! The Stainless Steel Magnaflows are polished nicely. And the quality of the muffler is incredible. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS MUFFLER!
I had a 3" APC stainless rolled edge angle cut tip welded on. They had to cut off 1" of the APC tip so it wouldn't stick out of the rear too far.
The full cat-back system included 2.25" bent stainless piping, a 2.25" Thrush glasspack #24201 for resonator and the Magnaflow SS listed above. Nice set-up.
98sr20ve 05-20-2002, 03:47 PM I just got a quote from a local shop that uses Magnaflow. The setup would be a 18 inch muffler, 21 inch resonator, all mandrel bent tubing, aluminized, everything maganaflow. Price was $325 installed. What do you think. Several sr20 owners recommend this shop.

Steve,
Might be a little high.
My complete set-up which is similiar to yours was approx. $280. The only diff is mine is completely stainless steel. Except for the Thrush glasspack.
The Maganflow SS is 100% stainless, the 2.25" piping is 100% stainless, the APC 3" tip is 100% stainless and all the welds were done with stainless weld.
If you need, I can look at the reciepts, but this is how it is from memory:
1. Maganflow SS is 100% stainless #14255 .......$71.40
2. 2.25" stainless piping, flanges, and labor .......$150.00
3. 3" APC Stainless tip ........................................$19.99
4. Thrush glasspack ............................................$14.99
plus shipping on muffler and tax totals estimated $280.00
The guy that did mine is incredible. the welds are clean, the bends are flawless. No crushes or crinks in the metal. Even the hangers are from stainless stock.
jacen99SE 05-21-2002, 10:06 AM I think that price sounds alright. I just prefer stainless, but I might have salted roads more often than VA.
Pics are on the way.
jomama 05-21-2002, 10:47 AM steve,
here's a good site to see all the different configurations of dynomax mufflers:
http://www.a-1performance.com/
i have the side inlet / center outlet ultraflow welded muffler. the prices on a-1 performance is not as good as ones you would find on www.summitracing.com. i only paid $50 for my welded muffler and $15 for the thrush glasspack that i replaced the resonator with. and to finish off with the sleeper look, i got a 2 1/2" borla tip. the car drones a bit at highway speeds, but sounds pretty reasonable around town.
in regards to mandrel bending, there are very few shops that actually have mandrel bending machines. so unless the shop that gave you the quote plans on welding pre-fabricated mandrel bent pipes, i would doubt that it's mandrel bent. but definitely double check with them to find out. good luck!
92SE-R 05-21-2002, 01:02 PM Get an oval one Steve. I have one and it is pretty quiet, even though it's a 3" straight through exhaust with no resonator. IMO, the oval one has more sound deadening material vs. the round ones.
Teal97 05-21-2002, 10:32 PM last year i mated a magnaflow 11225 (and a short piece of pipe)to a courtesy b-pipe with decent results. added a twin tip to extend beyond the bumper. i'm much happier with this combo than the droning greddy sp it replaced.

97 se-r w/ hs gen3, oem cat...
geeio 05-22-2002, 10:14 AM magna flow and dynomax is there a diffrence im on the magnaflow side i liked their site better and i have one but is there a difffrence they look like they have the same design and are both ss and have life time warentys
RySE-R 1 05-22-2002, 11:56 PM I went to a racing shop that custom fabricates headers and exhausts, and they use only stainless steel. For a 2.25" full catback piping and putting on my Tsudo muffler they charged me $225. It was too loud though since I didn't have a resonator put on. I got a Thrush Magnum 24" glasspack as my resonator and it made a huge difference. The car burbles nicely and really growls when you punch it. Not like a Honda at all. I highly recommend the Thrush as a resonator.
For your horsepower on the VE, though, I would go with 2.5" piping diameter.
