: 5th Gear Noise

This weekend I had a new 5th gear and 5th gear synchro installed in my transmission (93 G20). Now when in 5th I hear two different high pitch whines, one when I'm in gear, and a slightly lower whine under load. I'm not getting any strange vibrations through the stick or anything, so I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this and could tell me what it is. Thanks for your help.

The problem is still happening. The sound under load has gone away, but I still have a whining in the 5th gear. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey bigjimslade, how much did all that work on the fifth gear cost you? Did you get this replaced because you had the fifth gear popout. I'm still trying to decide whether to replace the whole tranny or get just my fifth gear fixed on my 91 se-r.

i have been driving with no fluid in my tranny for the last 2 months since i got the car no problems here cept for alot of metallic noise when i accelerate at cruise the noise is gone but i suppose gears clashing around in a hollow case would tend to do that

Yes, this was brought about because of the 5th gear popout. Instead of ordering the kit from Courtesy we took the part numbers and ordered the parts from a local Nissan dealer, at a fairly decent discount from the 300 dollar price tag. Looking back I'm not sure whether or not I'd follow the same path. It cost less, but it may be worth the extra money to not have to worry about all of the things that could possibly go wrong when disassembling a transmission. But, if you buy a used transmission you can never be sure if it's going to have the same problem.
