I was talking to someone today about my lightened flywheel I ordered and he told me that unless I had my engine balanced, using a lightweight aluminum flywheel could cause engine life to be shortened. He informed me that cast iron flywheels are made/used to dampen and absorb vibration. So using the aluminum allows the unbalanced parts to cause internal stress and vibration. Is this accurate? Is it worth it?

Because our engines are internally ballanced the light wieght aluminum flywheels do not effect out cars negatively. These a great buys. This guy must be an older V8 owner.

This is the same crap people always say about putting UR pulleys on our cars. It's been done before and it works. See my poll from last week asking whether or not flywheels are worth it. Huge majority of people here said it was.

Is it worth it to have a stocker machined if I am doing a clutch upgrade?
I heard 3-4 lbs will help throttle response etc.
I am worried about the transmission suffering more than the engine.

Been doggin the crap outta a 94 with 168k on it. Had the flywheel and pulley's for about 75k or so. No problem's so far.

I've been wondering the same thing Bennitto............about lightening a stock flywheel. I'm doing my clutch in a few short weeks, and I'm still debating, but what I've gathered is that its definately good to have a lightened flywheel, whether aftermarket or stock, but with a stock you take the chance that something could happen to it (cracking, breaking, wearing, etc.). Just take it to a good machine shop who knows what they are doing and you shouldn't have any problems.
