I am reading up on the koni shocks used with Maxima struts. I went to Koni's website and it does not list an adjustable shock available for the early maxima. But I read the forums, and many people say they are adjustable, but not externally adjusted?

Are they adjustable or not? Koni's website listed only offering the Koni "special red" shocks

The red's are adjustable but must be removed from the vehicle to adjust. (must fully compress shaft into the shock and rotate clockwise/couter clockwise)

I think what a lot of people use are the maxima strut housings with the B15 spec V inserts which are externally adjustable.

Read that thread again. YOur close but just a important smidge off.

Spev v inserts fit B13 Housing, to use the Maxima RED insert you need either Max or Altima Housing.
