recently my sentra (1998 model) has been making a weird knocking noise. when i accelerate it sounds like something is knocking under the car. its the worst at 40mph if i barely touch the throttle its a constant click. ive noticed the noise when i go over bumps too. it almost sounds like im driving on a flat tire. any ideas???

Does it knock faster as you accelerate? How about when your in one spot and hit the gas? I think I know of the noise your talking about as I saw a guy with a B14 whos front passenger side made that click/knock type of noise.

Maybe Either your Axle or Rod Knock. Hope its an Axle!

ya, actually it does knock faster as i accelerate. but like i said, it knocks the fastest when im at about 40mph and barely touching the gas. its almost like i can feel it through the pedal and underneath my feet.

ROD KNOCK.

:(

Get under the car and find out if it sounds like its coming from "inside the oil pan"

I don't think its rod knock if its dependent upon bumps in the road?

does it vary when you turn the wheel then accelerate? Axles generally click when they are about to bite it... if its a clicking/knocking sound and its not your axle, check if your motor/tranny mounts are all tight as well... that could be anything.

it does vary when i turn the wheel and accelerate. i just took it out driving and its a constant knock now but gets worse with acceleration/going over a bump/turning. it just started knocking after i took the strut out and took the front left strut out because i was going to install coil overs. i never put the coil overs on because they sent me the wrong ones. so i put the strut back together and now its knocking. i checked the spring and where everything is sitting and all the bolts and everything is fine but it continues to knock. :squint:

Hm... It sounds like either your axle or a wheel bearing. Go back and check your axle nut and make sure its on good.

check all your motor mounts... ive had a problem with mine in the past. But also check out the wheel bearings and axles.

now its getting worse. knocks constantly now and with every turn and bump. is this safe to drive at high speeds?

Is that a trick question? I would have someone that you trust who knows about cars to have a ride with you or at least take it to a shop and have it looked at. Whatever it is will fail soon enough and you will know exactly what it is.

ive had several people including myself look at it thoroughly. i guess my last option is to take it to the shop. :squint:

may be obvious but you did tighten the strut mount and nuts? Simple way to see if it's bearings or not is if it does it when the car isn't moving. lower end bearings that is..

Im thinking wheel bearing...jack the car up and check for wheel play...also check to see if the bolts are tight where the strut attaches to the spindle. I had an annoying rattle, tighten up those bolts, no problem since.

ya so i found the knocking on my car...the passenger side wheel was missing a lug nut. and no it wasnt my fault, i never messed with that side, obviously someone took it. bastards. :squint:

I think someone forgot to torque down there lug nuts .

One missing lug would not cause the vibration you were feeling... one missing lug and the rest somewhat loose would. Ask me how I know!

lol...ya it wasnt one lug nut missing causing the vibration...so i went around and decied to check my lugs, EVERY SINLE nut was loose on every wheel. i only messed with one wheel so either all 16 nuts rattled themselves loose or someone loosend them. im kinda creeped out.
