: why did the nx even go into production?
Fonque 05-21-2002, 03:11 PM What was the reason for nissan to even produce the nx? it was marketed in the US for only 3 years and if compared to the current selection of cars at the time it was quite a queer car. Imean there was no reason for a another 2 door, the sentra had a coupe form and without knowledge of the chassis you would have no idea it was a sentra. The NX seems like a freakish blip in the US car market o.O
kleensleeper 05-21-2002, 03:22 PM Well, whatever the reason.I'm happy nissan built the NX because i think we have a very special little car here. The perfect Sleeper.

Son Of Skyline 05-21-2002, 04:01 PM My guess is that Nissan wanted to produce a car similar to the Sentra, but sportier and targetted to a younger age bracket. Though even I still question the sanity of Nissan's design department, you have to admit that the NX does look more sporty than the Sentra SE-R. I don't mean better looking, but sportier. They also outfitted the NX with little performance enhancers like better tires, wider rims, bigger brakes, stiffer springs...etc. The t-tops also make me think that they wanted to make a "fun, sporty car for the younger generation."
IMO of course.

Well, that doesn't mean much considering that the Sentra SE-R didn't last that much longer.
Pretty White 05-21-2002, 04:11 PM You guys aren't Nissan historians I see.
The NX is a direct replacement of the Pulsar NX. The Pulsar NX was always the sportier side of the B11-B12-B13 chassis.
Why did Nissan stop making 2 door cars? Answer that one!
kleensleeper 05-21-2002, 04:47 PM Good points Sonofskyline.
Pretty white! I think "Fonque" already knew about the NX1600 & 2000 as a replacement for the Pulsar NX?
A much improved replacement.
You're correct also.

Kelway 05-21-2002, 06:57 PM I have to admit, I didn't care too much for the looks of the NX when it was new, but loved the SE-R. I always respected it though, because it shared the same platform and drivtrain. I was looking for a Classic when I found my NX. Now I wouln't trade it for any Classic. T-tops, better brakes, and a sportier coupe profile. I think it looks better now than it did 10 years ago. I hate when people try to call it a Pulsar, though.
tissue 05-21-2002, 07:23 PM The NX was released for 6 years in Australia, and it would probably be the same for Europe.
Over here there were no small coupe Nissans available, the only coupe Nissans were 300ZXs and Skylines. The Pulsar SSS (aka Sunny GTi) was like the sentra, but it was a 5-door hatchback.
As pretty white said, the NX was a replacement for the aging EXA (aka Pulsar NX). They are both small, coupe, targa topped, sporty Nissans.

So was the 200sx. Almost all imports only have a 4-5 year run per chassis. Exception is the last version of the Acura Integra which I believe ran from 1993 or 1994 until 2000.

Hell BMW E30 chassis is a 10 year design in the US and even longer in Europe. How long Mercedes ran their chassis. Euro's tend to stretch a chassis foreva!
cossieturbo 05-22-2002, 12:12 AM Yup, the NX was the replacement for the Pulsar, but it was also a bit of an experiment in design for the younger buyer. A group of College students at the "Somthing" (I'm old, can't remember name) Design Institute in CA. were asked to design this new NX as it's cheaper to pay college students rather then pay ones own design team. From the initial design, the blokes at Nissan took over. I think it really did not make it here because Americans have a different sense of style compared to other countries and the marketing was not very aggressive for this car comparatively. The 1st time I saw one, I went crazy for the headlights. Every time I saw one, which was rare, I was caught like a deer. So one day I turned the Bimmer in and got one. Ok, i'm babbling... it's the old age...

Is there anyone here besides me who has owned every gen. Pulsar/NX? I had a 83 Pulsar in High school, a 87 Pulsar about 5 years ago and I then bought a 200sx SE-R but could not resist the chance to get the NX2000 so I sold it and got my current 93 NX.
rednxcoupe 05-22-2002, 07:59 AM the nx was a replacement for the exa, which at the time was a more sportier model of the australian pulsar. which the nx got replaced here by the s14 200sx. as far as i know the nx was a better looking, younger version of the pulsar sss over here, but apart from the looks as basically the same
NXturbo 05-22-2002, 09:10 AM The NX was sold in the US as part of the
"pocket rocket" trend in the early nineties.
The CRX was doing good so along came the NX,
MX-3, Storm, & Paseo. Everyone was jumping
into the sporty hatchback segment. Too bad it
didn't last as the NX was the best of the
bunch.
I wonder sometimes what would happen if they
brought it back. 2 door QR25DE hatch w/ t-tops
sounds pretty cool!
Fonque 05-22-2002, 10:47 AM well i do understand about the lineage of this car as well as the se-r and its counter parts. The sentra se-r is not as queer as the nx because it was replaced not discontinued after only a 3 year run. Marketing wise of course im no expert i see the NX as a company mistake in the us market. The se-r evolved the coupe was flat out dropped.
and you do make a good point on why doesnt nissan make any more 2 door cars?, aside from the new z and the g35 coupe to soon be released.
cossieturbo 05-22-2002, 11:41 AM Added note to my post: Seams the NX was designed by both college students (I think the Pasadena Design Institute) and Nissan Design International in California. So pony up with the question marks... This car was designed in America by quite a few Americans... Sooo what went wrong?

American's design ugly cars. All American's except those with the last name "Shelby" that is...
cossieturbo 05-22-2002, 05:32 PM I like the NX design a lot... what is odd though, is the fact that the car was designed here yet it does not appeal to many American buyers. Not everyone has tastes I guess. What I am basically saying is... Look at the ugly square shyte boxes being made and sold here now. People buy this crap!?!? I love America (HOME!!!), but cripes blokes, where do we get our modern auto designers? I know, from the school for the blind (no offence intended toward the blind). Now I hope I have offended someone who just purchased one of these new bricks, but as they say, to each his own. :D Dumb arses... and BMW is the dogs shyte for designing while on drugs (no offence to drugs intended :D). The new 5 & 7... Goddddd, are you people daft? Ok, enough spouting off...

Cjburn 05-23-2002, 12:42 AM BMW's designs are absolutely the most beautiful, classy styles in ANY era. In just my opinion. They draw up a car that looks new, but looks like a BMW and I think is attractive. If you want an ugly car try Chevy, umm Cavalier, Sunfire, the new Monte Carlo...oh my god it's the ugliest car every produced. Ford is not too bad, all in all. Chrysler isn't that bad either, not great though. I've always liked oddball hatches, that's why the NX has grown on me.
cossieturbo 05-23-2002, 02:17 AM so what part of BMW do you work for? ;) Just joking. I agree with you on the many cars you listed as being "design challenged" crap, yet as a long time BMW owner (1987-present) and long time Bimmer file, I can't stomach the trunk, rear doors and headlights on the new 7. The new 5 has odd looking headlights also. I just get the sense of needing to straighten them, but no one likes a wacko like me taking a chisel & hammer to their new baby. So on goes the "to each his own". Us old folks are just set in our ways I guess. :)
