It really comes down to how much power your ride is making and how streetable you wish to keep your car. Cryoing helps and so does stress relieving via smoothing all round gear edges. Don't bust your hump by over doing it if you don't need to though, I should know I went a little over the top. There are a few companies out there that make very strong gear sets for these tranys. It just comes down to $$. Getting the case welded before it cracks is a good idea, just make sure the axle seal and race still fit after welding is done. If your not making big power, J.B. Weld should do nicely on filling the trany case in. clean all surfaces 1st. I stress relived the case and then had it welded for $70. I hope this helps. I'll watch for this post if you have more questions.

NOTE: I have a friend who cryoed 3rd gear and it still broke from the DETs power & his 17" wheels. I know low aspect ratio tires do transfer more shock to the drive train & gears. Something to think about.

Oh yaaaah! 300HP+ :) Shot pean them, stress relieve them, sonic resonance them and cryo them...I still don't know if 3rd gear will hold up. You'll have a good chance it will though. If you lose the 17s (yah right, that'll happen) ;) and go to 15s, you have an even better chance. I say try all the tricks you can find and if they don't hold, switch to custom gears from Quiafe or one of those Australia super shops. Good luck bloke.

I heard third gear from g20 or primera is taller, and stronger from a guy at a meet a few months back.
A quick search yielded a lot of speculation, and no sound conclusions.
If it's taller it could help, I dunno just a thought.

You might also want to get ES MMs too. Cheap mod, but helps a lot in taking stress away from engine and tranny components.
