Im gona be doing a tuneup so i figured id bump up the timing in the process. Now the question is how safe is 19deg advance? I will be running on 91 california gas :) Btw will i feel a SOTP difference?

As a side not i just got highport JDM intake cam for my 99 SE-L lowport, will that also be a SOTP difference?

I would stick with 17 degrees. 19 degrees isn't going to provide a significant improvement (if any) over 17 degrees and you'll increase the chances of detonation.

If you have this (http://www.g20style.com/91intakecam.htm) cam then you should feel a SOTP difference to the tune of up to 15hp.

I've tuned a couple of 200's at 19 dergrees and they ran great. Got 148.5 whp out of one and a 14.79 in the quarter mile. It had a 91 intake cam ps header and intake. It depends on the car.

Agreed, 19. I couldn't believe the difference I felt in my 98 when I advanced mine.

I'm not disagreeing that you guys see better results from 19deg, however with the heat of summer coming I personally suggest 17.

The advantage of a little low end throttle response will come at the loss of top end horsepower. And if the knock sensor detects pinging or knocking the ECU will retard the timing more than the 2 degrees you attempted to gain.

More info here (http://www.sr20de.net/engine/about_timing.html).

He stated he has the JDM cam? I believe that is from the 10:1 engines and is actually even more aggressive than the '91-'93 cams. He should see better dyno results than what SCC got from the '91-'93 cam install.

19. Ran 19 in all my NA SR20s for years. Never heard a ping. Run 19 now. I can tell a difference between 17 and 19 in my 98 SE. The engine doesn't seem any faster, just much smoother running.

I run 21 degrees on 93 octane. No detonation here. And I drive mine like a dog. We'll see how she holds up in the dry TX Summer heat soon enough.

On my '91 with JDM motor, going to 19 from 17 was worth a couple HP, however with the 10:1 compression and 91 Octane it was detonating. It made 148.8 at 17, with no detonation.
