: My wheel shakes at idle. ES mounts
98sr20ve 05-21-2002, 09:25 PM I installed all four ES engine mounts. Now my wheel vibrates at idle badly. At first it moved about an inch, now it is only a 1/4 inch. If I totally loosen the rod that lets me move the wheel up and down it doesn't shake at all. When the wheel isn't shaking I don't mind the bushings at all. But that wheel bouncing up and down has got to go. I can’t loosen that thing all the time but I need to get this thing to stop shaking. Any Ideas.

jacen99SE 05-21-2002, 09:34 PM Take the inserts near the firewall out and fill the gaps in that mount with <stuff>.
I used this <stuff>:
http://www.mcmaster.com/
type in urethane casting compound. You want the Flexible Urethane 94A stuff. I have also used the Quick-Set Solid Urethane but I think it might be too brittle.
You could also try using the ES suspension grease on the outside of the inserts for that mount. If you allow that mount to have a little play, you can get rid of most of the cabin vibrations.

Are you talking about the rear tranmission mount under the car.

MaddMatt 05-21-2002, 09:52 PM Just install the front and rear ES mounts only. Leave the other 2 as factory bushings.

It's a little late for the passenger bushing. I cut it out rather then wait for Nissan to press it out. Plus, I don't mind the way the car is when the wheel isn't shaking. It is just fine when I loosen the wheel adjustment lever. No shakes in the entire car.

98sr20ve 05-22-2002, 08:58 AM Ok, I went out and loosened the Dog Bone mount. Made sure it was centered and didn't have any tension at rest (so to speak). Idle was slightly better. Sprayed some silicone on the mounts to help them seat. Idle better again. Raised the idle to 950rpm. Shaking gone. Maybe with the VE I can lower the idle speed. That VE idles so smooth. Do you think raising the idle speed would cause any problems? I don't see how it would really.

Yep.

Nope. I did that until I got the JWT ECU with S3 program.
Benito Malito 05-22-2002, 11:51 AM THe higher idle keeps oil ressure up in the head, and helps engine health. (according to andreas) This helps the cam lope smooth out as well.
Your alignment might be off, and the mounts are exacerbating the problem, Happened to me cause I did the suspension, and then the mounts, before I had the car re-aligned.

If you just did this, give them about 2-3 weeks before you do anything. The mounts will "break-in" and will soften up a bit. This has been my experience.
Pretty White 05-22-2002, 10:21 PM The wheel shakes. What do you expect from polyueutherane motor mount inserts. Stop whining and enjoy the vibes. Drive 16V VW or a older 5 cylender Audi then report back if you think your car shakes too much. I am getting sick of heaing guys who want a cadillac ride but ferarri launches. It shakes, get used to it, it is solid!
Put it this way. If it didn't shake then I would be worried.

Lets see. I fixed the problem with some of the previos advice and by raising my idle. Why live with a poor comprimize if you don't need to.

You raised your idle. Now how will you diagnoise a problem with a vacuum leak, set correct timing or any other idle issues from now on. Some compromise. Thats not a poor compromise. Thats polyeutherane. (in my Chris Rock voice)"It is supposed to shake"

Easy, lower the idle. Takes 1 minute.

You missed my point. If you raise the idle you will never know if there is a problem. If the TPS is bad you will never know either. If you cleaned your TB and the TPS gets screwed you will never know. If you leave a vaccum off and the idle goes up you will never know. The timing will not be able to be locked in. Things like that.
I am not saying that what you are doing is bad, it is just not the real solution. Besides, you get used to the car shaking after a while and it does settle in a bit.

I won't know if a problem isn't there? Give me a break. JWT raises the idle on the programs for the S3 and S4. It's only 100 rpm over the recommend level. I looked it up. This is so stupid. Why are you trying to convince me that having a car that doesn't shake is bad. I am supposed to love the shake. BTW I work with kids, some born addicted to cocaine. One of them almost freaked out because of the shaking. I think I will risk it.

Yes, but the JWT ECU compensates for other parameters and recognizes the 100rpm increase and does not throw off the ECU because it is raised by the ECU.

My point once again is you have near solid motor mounts. This sounds like the guy who puts on a free flowing muffler and complains that it louder than stock and wants a free flowing exhaust that puts out MAX HP but sounds as quiet as a stock muffler.

You are really making the car dual purpose. I hear ya!
This is not a stab at you personally, I just want others who read this thread to know that this is what you have to look foward to and to really consider if you want to make that sacrafice.
