i know that new rotors should be bedded with old pads and new pads should be bedded with old rotors, but can you jsut throw em on and thats it or do you need to prep the old rotor for bedding new pads?

I'd like to know the recommended brake bedding procedure.

personally, i've just tossed new rotors and pads on at the same time with no ill effects that i can tell. but if it were for a race car... I'd go ahead and do it the right way JUST to be safe.

I think the sheet from Carbotech says to make some light 30mph stops, then 50mph stops, then park the car and let the brakes cool off. Don't stop all the way just go from 30 to 10 and so on. If you are doing this for rear brakes also, leave the parking brake off.

That's what I do. I think the "new pad/old rotor, new rotor/old pad" theory is a bunch of BS.

i have never heard of this...

typically i clean as much of the cosmoline off of the rotor as possible, throw'em on with new pads...

i go out do a few 30-10 stops, 45-10, 50-10, 60-10 and by that point the brakes are starting to smoke.. then just idle around to cool down.. NEVER had a problem this way and the pads/rotors last a long time with little, if any, warpage..

I do about 10 hard braking stops from 80km/h - 5km/h all in a row. Then I let the pads and rotors "rest" overnight. The next morning they're perfect. This is the procedure that I've followed for years with no ill effects whatsoever.

I've heard that story about new pads/old rotors and vice versa but never really prescribed to it. If in doubt called up the pad manufacturer and ask what they recommend.

I usually do 60mph-20mph repeated until you can start to smell the pads, drive around to let them cool, and repeat allowing the pads to heat up a little more.

BTW, I had a hard time bedding in new race pads in street tires on the deserted farm roads around me (11.75" rotors with wilwood calipers)! The tires don't have enough traction to really heat up the pads, and the brakes cool so well... The pads start to heat up and just grab so well that they don't have to work very hard.

I drove around doing some light braking while maintaing speed with my other foot. I'd do that for a short distance then let off for awhile. Seemed to work, when I got home I could smell them a little and they were hot.

i also have never heard this "Bedding" procedure, but i just put all new rotors calipers and pads on like 4-5 months ago and drove like i always do. not an issue yet.

Improper bedding can lead to premature rotor failure (warping, cracking, hot sports) and/or squealing. More info here:

....organic will bed with normal driving....
....organic/metallic will bed with, hold 50mph with light brake pressure for 5 sec. let off for 10sec., hold 30mph with light brake pressure for 15 sec. let off for 10sec., hold 10mph with light brake pressure for 20 sec. let off for 10sec. Drive normal the rest of the day with the squeaks , repeat the next day , no more squeaks
