: I came, I trashed, I conquered...
Well it's late. I just finished my first tranny swap. What a pain in the ass. Had to swap out some sensors, and decided I'd go ahead and put my ES motor mount inserts in. Here's the main problems I ran into. So here's my tranny install top 10!! Forgive me I need sleep.
1.) People at discount auto parts are idiots.
2.) Not all trannies use the same speedo plug
3.) ES Motor mount inserts suck to put in
4.) See #3
5.) Keeping track of proper nuts and bolts is important.
6.) Got the whole tranny installed, and low and behold. One of my seals are bad
7.) For some reason the driver side axle didn't sit in all the way. Used a BFH, and it straightened right up.
8.) People at Miami Subs are idiots
9.) Do not leak tranny fluid all over fathers brand new shop.
10.) A few extra parts never hurt anyone.

QR25DEspecV 05-24-2002, 03:57 AM good to hear that your back on the road matt, so did you have to sell your rims?
Wheels are gone. Thomas ended up working out something with me.

12. Gear lube smells like shit, and if it gets on any of your clothes they're garbage.

True, and on B13's, 91/92 have a mechanical speedo, 93/94 have an electrical speedo. You need to swap the sensor.

They're cheap enough that you should have had them on hand before you started the job. And while you're at it, it's not a bad idea to do the rear main crank seal.
9.) Do not leak tranny fluid all over fathers brand new shop.
And don't listen to anyone who tells you that you can pull the axles out without draining the fluid. I slipped out the passenger axle, and low and behold..... Two quarts of BRAND NEW Redline MT90 on the ground and in a dirty pan, and 1 arm drenched in Redline later, I now know better.

Redline MT90 doesn't smell bad at all :p
Cheers,
Chris

jomama 05-24-2002, 09:44 AM if any of you care to know, a buddy of mine (ltrain) posted this a while ago. if you have trouble getting the motor mounts in (namely the front one) BOIL it in water for a minute or two to soften it up. he did it and it worked like a charm. i didn't do it and we had a bitch of a time lubing and pressing mine in.
se-r pastor 05-24-2002, 09:57 AM Started my swap last night. 4 hours to pull the tranny was nasty.
A couple more for the list.

Something I've done, restoring my other car:
I get a big piece of cardboard, and punch hole w/a screwdriver at regular intervals. Label each hole with a ltter code ("A", "B", "C"). Keep a note pad handy, lines marked in the same letters. As you pull each bolt off, shove it in one of the holes and write where it came from on the pad next to the appropriate letter.
OTOH, one strp I do that might not apply to you, is to take the "bolt board" to the local industrial-fastener shop, and upgrade to Grade 8 or stainless steel, depending on applications. "I'll take six of "A", four of "B" with locking nuts and flat washers", etc. The counter help seem pleased that I don't walk in with a greasy paper bag of mixed bolts and a guess of how many of what I want.
SE-Rican 05-24-2002, 10:27 AM Well my friend I am glad you are back in business!!!

Amen dude. I spent about 2 extra hours trying to figure what happened to all the bolts I used to have separated into separate piles went. It turns out some friends who were working with me threw them all into one magnetic pan so we could put more in another one

I don't understand that stupid axle. I shove and shove forever, then all of a sudden it just goes in. Stupid circlip!!
