: Clutch?

Ok--I decided to adjust mine to the specs in the Haynes manual. I am curious where you guy's clutch lets up at. What I mean is, when you release the clutch, when does it 'grab' and make the car move? Does it happen 1/2" off of the floor, 3" or about 2" short of the top? My clutch pedal is resting about 6" off of the floor which is withing spec. The control lever in the engine bay has 1/8" of travel which is also in spec. Finally, there is about 1/2" freeplay when you press the clutch in before you actually start to feel resistance. However, I have to release the clutch within 2" of its max. travel before it grabs and the car moves forward---seems like a good deal of movement before the clutch will grab, what do you think?

I kind of like the idea of a clutch that grabs right off of the floor. But then again, you still have to let it out another 5" for it to reach it's resting spot anyway, so why not have it 'grab' higher up in the travel?

Your thoughts on all of this?

Thanks!

Its all a matter of how you like it.

Well, let me ask you this. If I adjust the clutch so that it takes off after I let the clutch off of the floor board, am I hurting the clutch in any way? What I mean is that when I did this, there was a LOT of slack in the cable in the engine compartment---I could pull about 1" of slack in the cable. Now, I can also say that the car took off as soon as I let the clutch out. The flip side is that there was also about 2.5" of free play in the clutch pedal when the manual says there should be 1/8"!!!!!! When they talk about the bracket in the engine, they also say it should be 1/8", but I think they mean the lever, not the slack in the cable. My lever had 1/8" not matter how I adjusted it.

What I fear is not adjusting it right and then burning my 75,000 clutch up. I would like to see 110,000 out of it before it needs replaced. It doesn't slip now---so let's hope:)

Thoughts based on that?

Thanks!

my clutch engaged right off the floor right after i had it installed..but after it got broken in, it engages about..id say 1" or 2" from the top. trust me..a clutch that engages right off the floor is no fun...although once you got use to it everything would be fine.

Just make sure the clutch has some free play in it. If it dosen't the t/o bearing will die a nasty death. It all comes down to personal taste.
