I have got this rubbing vibrating sound coming out of the right front of my 92 SE-R. It sounds pretty nasty especially in first gear and in reverse or when I go over small bumps in first. What is this noise I know I need to replace some things up front but Im not sure where to start? Any info on this will be greatly appreciated. TIA Oh by the way there is new axles in there and it was making the noise before the axle change. could it be the ball joint, motor mounts, control arm. I dont know??

No one knows what this sound could be?

Have you checked the brake backing plate to see if it is hitting?
Also does it make any noises w/the R/F wheel lifted and you are spinning it??

As far as I know it doesnt make the noise with the wheel lifted and me spinning it. Im thinking it is some bushings worn out or either a motor mount but Im not sure. Also I see alot of guys in here from Virginia. Im from VA Danville as a matter of fact. Just got stationed here in New Mexico about a month ago.

You might want to put your ride on a lift and put it thru gets gears(loading the motor) and checking the motor mounts and looking for excessive movement.
You're from Danville, cool-never been on that side of the state too much.

Does it make this noise when decelerating while in gear? Sound like more of a "groaning" noise? If so, its your motor mount. Passenger side, right by the coolant overflow bottle. I think I paid around 40 or 50...but no more than 80 for that from nissanparts.cc. Solved my problem, and many others. Takes about 10-15 minutes to install, with just hand tools.

I hear a "groaning" like sound from the front of the car when deceleration and/or cornering. What could be the cause?
Rick Zotz (rick@zotz.com)
Like several others on the list, my '92 SE-R was groaning from the area around the front passenger footwell. The noise occurred on heavy deceleration and suspension compression. For months, I thought the front control arm bushings might be worn from the lowered stance of the Eibach springs, until I re-installed the stock springs and the noise grew worse and more frequent. It sounded like something was ready to break.

The engine rocked back and forth a lot, so I suspected the rear motor mount (called "rear insulator") was worn from the torque. It was somewhat collapsed, so I replaced it. (The procedure for this is given below.) The groaning continued.

I went to the dealer to compare my right motor mount (called "front insulator", the expensive, fluid-filled one) to the one in a new SE-R, and sure enough, mine was collapsed. I replaced it. (The procedure for this is also given below.) This time, the groaning vanished. A new right mount IS the cure. The left motor mount (called the "rear engine mounting") looked good, so I'll wait until next year. Prices and part numbers are as follows:

Front Insulator
(aka: right motor mount) 11210-0M800 $85
Rear Insulator
(aka: rear motor mount) 11320-0M002 $56

That sounds exactly like my problem so Im gonna go to the Nissan dealership and order some new mounts. I feel alot better now knowing what the problem is thanks for the info alot. Im gonna replace the mounts I have the ES inserts and Im gonna get the full ES bushing kit and some new ball joints for it probably order them today.
I went to the mountains on the old SE-R yesterday and overheated the brakes but it was still fun first time in the mountains.

if you have a front strut bar it could be hitting your underside of your hood.

One other thought... I have been dealing with this odd rubbing noise since I put the Eibachs on and for years had no idea what it was. It got worse when I made left hand turns. Never guess what it was... ;) Part of the plastic gaurd for the belts goes over the inner CV boot on the passenger side. I finally noticed that the boot was rubbing against this part for the shield. So I cut this part of the gaurd off and the noise is gone. Just a tech note.

I have that same problem with the noise in the front .I kept thinking it was something to do with my new springs & shocks combo. (ST Springs with KYB Gr2's)Does anyone have this setup? The dealer could not tell me what was the problem even after a test drive. They said i "CUT my Brand new ST Springs"not true.

Well I ordered my new motor mount today $118.00 not to cheap. I got it from the dealership. While I was there I had the pleasure to see a 91 SE-R with turbo and a 50 shot of nitrous. It was the owner of the dealerships car. Anyways the guy that owned it helped me try to figure out what was wrong with mine. Pretty nice guy the only other classic SE-R I have seen in Albuquerque since Ihave been here.

I do beleive that I haved solved my problem. I put a new mount in and it seemed to have stopped. Now I guess that I will just have to replace all the other mounts now.

Good to hear it worked, ringgold. I replaced only that mount 1 year and 17,000 miles ago, and I have no problems....yet. I'd like to replace all of the mounts, but haven't gotten around to it.
