: Who has busted a stud?

Okay, so I put on a new Greddy exhaust, and Hotshot headers yesterday. The header swap was actually easier than I expected, however, I busted the farthest right stud, under the AIV valve. Who here has had the same problem? Is it fairly easy to fix? What about if I leave it for a little bit, until I can get around to it? That shouldnt be too bad should it? Also, has anyone used heat wrap before? I have the headers wrapped in the fiberglass heat tape, and I wonder just how well it works.

That seems to be the most common stud to break. My theory on why is because the EGR tube is right above it. Another idea is because when you loosen the EGR tube, you may put extra stress on that bolt. Its usually a good idea to replace those studs when you put a header on. They cost $2.50 each from Courtesy.

Some of this RTV Ultra High Temperature Copper Gasket Maker will do the trick. I never fixed my stud. It never leaked. No carbon ever formed around it. It would require that you loosen the header again and smear a bunch on there. Then tighten it and make sure its on there good like caulking a tub faicet.

Yep Yep happened to me to.

fartherest right stud like everyone else.

My theory is that the flange of the factory exhaust manifold is about a 1/8 inch thicker than the header flange. Ok that means when you tighten down the header you are going farther down on the stud, Into threads that never seen a bolt before. Those threads are rusty and you ring the stud right off.

Smooth I am getting ready to try the RTV trick .

Owe yeah Smooth did you get those white Lay ins on yet?

Happened to me too. I just got around to fixing it last night. I used a 7/32 drill bit and screw extractor to remove the broken part. Take your time and do it right the first time. Buy the hardest drill bit you can find. Remove the oil collector, the drivers side rad fan and the header. This will give you more room to work. Drill into the center of the bolt about 3/16 of an inch and lightly tap the screw extractor in with a hammer. Then use an adjustable wrench to turn the extractor and it should come right out. You may need a small drill or a right angle drill to get enough clearance. Hope this helps.

I snapped the same stud when installing my hotshot header on my '91 nx2000. I used the same method previously mention to extract the broken stud. I then took the stud to a local sears hardware and matched the threads up with a high grade metric bolt. Threaded it in, torqued it down and it worked just great.

Nobody busted one on saturday but I am driving around without on. The farthest passenger side. I don't think its leaking so I should be good.

I had the same problem when I changed out my header last week, one stud would not go back in, it was the only one that came off too  Luckily I had a bolt the same thread pattern and I put that in.
