There's a '98 Sentra SE for sale in my area. Black 5-speed, 85000 miles. The used-car lot is asking $4500, and from the pictures it appears to be in great shape, at least cosmetically.

Do you guys think that's a reasonable price? KBB lists retail at $6300 and private party at bout $5k for "excellent" condition. It seems like a good price, but what are people paying lately?

I paid a little over $5k for my 99 SE-L. It had about 58k on the odo. It was crystal blue color w/5spd.

Be ready for B-pillar (maybe even a-pillar) rust, crappy power window switches/motors, and no limited slip.

Definately wasn't as quality built as my B13 was, maybe cause they're hecho en Mexico.

Check it out really thoroughly; definitely shine a flash light in the oil fill hole. If it appears to be well maintained and it's really clean that seems fair to me. I am a little biased though. :D

So, where should I look for rust? In the pics the rear wheel wells are clean. I'm used to looking under the core support and in the doorframes/rocker panels of the B13, but have no experience with a B14... Where on the B and A pillars does rust occur?

Dude I would jump on it. These cars are not common. That is a good pirce for the miles, especially if it is in good shape. I bought mine with over 200,000 for $4000 and it is running awesome. I love my car and you will love yours too. But like they said be careful and look it all over. Rust occurs in the places you said but also on the control arms and rear multi link beam. Check struts for sever rust too a little is common. Good Luck.

I have some rust on the rear left door frame (not on the door it self, but where the door step is. I have rust on the hood, where it locks in, I also have some rust on some bolts, but thats nothing too serious. I got this car from Maryland, and it snows quite a bit up there, so rust and salt damage is a bit expected.

You guys will hate me for this.

I helped my friend negotiate a deal recently on a very clean 99 SE-L with 137K for $2800. The seller(a late 50's guy, who upgraded to an 07 300m) wanted $3500 firm but I pointed out that it was missing the SE-L wheels(car have steelies on them) which makes the car very unique, AC/Heat only worked on 4 and the front bumper cover was not sitting correctly on the support. As it turns out, the metal bracket which holds the support was bent on the passenger side causing the bumper to sag. In the process of replacing so the bumper cover can be sitting properly again.

Where can you find a SE-L for $2800? It's unheard of and never again unless it's junked or beat up.

I got my SE-L because of the rims :biggthump lol j/k

But the rims on my SE-L are one of the biggest things that I love about my car. IMO the SE-R 5 spoke rims are, hands down, the best looking 5 spoke rims I EVER seen. I'm disappointed that nissan stopped putting them on the Sentras.

I wish Nissan would bring the rims but in couple different sizes, 15, 16, 17 :biggthump

Ok sorry I'm done talking about the awesome SE-R rims lol

Oh also if your friends the freaking awesome SE-R rims they can be gotten here (http://shop.wheelsrims.net/search.html?offset=0&make=nissan&model=sentra&year=1999&part_type=wheels_rims&part_subtype=alloy_wheel&diameter=15) for a very nice price :)

Nah, my female friend is known to take a curb badly so getting her SE-L rims would just messed them up, why bother. She even said she'll just destroy them as usual. On her last car, the wheels were all mangled up due to her habit to parking close to the curb. Now we wouldn't want that? I'm giving her my set of B13 Classic wheels with new tires to replace the steelies. I rather see the Classic wheels get torn to chunks than the SE-L's.

Honestly you have a good point. Most people don't do that... til they notice the cake batter when they get home. :(

as for topic... I think thats a pretty good price. But thats all on a count of a perfect title, body shape and well...feel.

Check the rebound on the struts also... If they are originals that might tell you a lot about what you will have to deal with as far as bushings and rack.

Good point, I agree :).

Now when I was buying my SE-L, it was at 96k miles, my mom was very against it, she said it had too many miles etc., but from what I'm noticing 96k miles is not really a lot... :D

Didn't buy it. Went to look at it a couple weeks ago. The front end didn't line up, the radio was trashed, couple other small issues. The dealer let me drive it despite telling me it had been sold that morning and "the buyer tried to pay with a check, and we don't take checks, so he went to get cash."

?!?!?!?!?!?!

Based on the drive, it would need shocks and brakes immediately after purchase, as well as the radio issue and a few other small things. Couple that with the fact that the front end was wierd, I wasn't going to try to buy it out from under someone.

If I move on an SE/SE-L, I'll have to sell my B13 first in any case.

Screw that... there damn loss. I would have snatched that thing up with no regret.
