I just finished my SR swap, it is a completely stock swap. When I really step on it and start boosting I hear a whistle/whining sound while the throttle is down. When I let off it immediately goes away. I stopped and had a friend rev it. It would only make noise for a sec after he let off the throttle. It sounds like its coming from the stock Recirc valve area. Any ideas?

are you holding boost?

I hate to break this to you... but I think the sound you are hearing is your turbo spoling

Its not just the turbo spooling, I can hear it spool under lower boost and it sounds completely different. This whine/whistle is very loud.

exhaust leak?

check the BOV if its opened, you might have to tighten it up.

people that dont know cars start to freak when they hear it...i took one friend out & when it was spooling she was like i dont know if its good or bad but im lovin that sound! (i then proceded to take her home so i could get her to make some sounds)

I thought the O2 sensor was the problem, but its not. I am thinking it may be my SMIC or an exhaust link somewhere. The 1 day my SR was running normal without this problem, I couldn't hear the turbo at all

are you useing a crappy BOV? this could definatly be the problem. i knew a guy with a DSM useing an ebay BOV........whistled while it worked :biggthump

my boy had that same problem on a greddy BOV for about a week till it got "broken in"

does it sound like a slide whistle, if you know what that is? It's one of those whistles that you blow into and then move a slide in and out with your hand and the pitch changes. What kind of swap did you do, a bluebird into a B13?

Girls don't get excited after hearing turbo spool. The only noise they make after hearing spool is:

"Whats that noise?"
"That sounds annoying?"
"Stop doing that, im getting sick/a headache."
"Why do you keep making that noise?"


The sound is a high pitch whistle, hard to explain as soon as I hit more then 5psi. My setup is a 98 S13 SR20det into a 90 240sx. 100% completely stock down to the airbox, SMIC and BOV.

Since I live in Mexico, street racing it's not ilegal (yet) so, I was in a red light and the co-driver of a RAM truck ask me, why does your car makes that sound? and I ask, what sound? and he answers, that one, the one that sounds like it's whistleing and the loud pssssssss, witch I answer polite, It's my turbo system, then both guys laught and they say, how can a little tsuru have a turbo, we have a hemi engine and I bet you can't catch us, witch I reply, alright, we'll see, after the green light you'll know what happend, hahahahahahahaha

best thing ever. when i was in autoshop. this rich gay boy brought in a twin turbo supra. he said it made a funny noise when he shifted. oh mn. i lost it. they still wouldnt let me drive it to "examine it" though. i sure tried.
