: Which Clutch to buy?
shumax 05-27-2002, 10:30 AM I did a search and found a good deal of info. However, I want to paint a picture and have some of you tell me what you think I should buy.
My car will have I/H/E by the end of the summer. As the clutch stands, I can't chirp into second gear so I know it's slipping during those RPM shifts. It doesn't slip at any other time though, so I am leaving it along until it does.
I plan to auto X the car in the future and that will be it other than some spirited driving from time to time. With that being said, what kind of clutch would you suggest? How much would it cost, and who has the cheapest price/best service. Finally, what can I expect to pay to have it put in? If someone is local to Mansfield, Ohio, I'd gladly pay them something to do it if they were interested.
Thanks!

SE-Rican 05-27-2002, 10:57 AM What is your intent? Are you staying N/A or are you going juice or boost?
If you stay N/A I would recomend a JWT PP and stock OEM disk. This set up works very well for N/A and if you decide to go past the N/A mods then a ACT set up will be cool. I am currently running a ACT Extreme PP and a ACT 4 puck disk (no springs) , It is very agressive but works well.
shumax 05-27-2002, 11:02 AM I won't be juicing or boosting, I will stay stock NA on the engine. So with your reccomendation with the JWT unit and the stock disk, what am I looking at in terms of cost for those parts? How much more would the ACT unit be should I decide to do that? Where can I get these parts from? How long will each last under *normal* conditions?
Finally, what can I expect to pay to have it put in the car?
Thanks!

DTyne 05-27-2002, 11:28 AM I'm looking into getting the JWT PP and the stock disc and I've been checking everywhere for prices. Right now its between courtesy and mossy nissan. They both give the 25% discount if you're on the se-r mailing list (probably give it to you even if you aren't on it), and the I'm expecting to pay a little over $300 for everything. I mean the disc, PP, clutch cable, axle seals, throwout bearing, clips, and alignment tool. The cheapest ACT clutch that I saw was $370 shipped. Anyway email Greg Vogel at Mossy and he'll hook you up or you can call courtesy. I think the price difference is minimal, it just depends on who you want to give your business too.
Serban 05-27-2002, 01:04 PM I've had the JWT pp with stock disc combo for almost 3 years. It has over 48k miles on it, and still grabs like a mofo. Very nice setup if you ask me. I paid $290 for it shipped back when I got it.
shumax 05-27-2002, 06:39 PM So what can I expect for someone to install it for me? What's this "mossy's" email addy?
Thanks!

NismoSER 05-27-2002, 08:05 PM Curt,
I had my clutch replaced last summer by a mechanic. It is supposed to take about 6-7 labor hours...it ended up costing me around 500-600 in labor alone.
But, I've read that you've done your CV axles already. You are almost halfway there. All you gotta do after pulling the axles is pull the starter, unbolt the tranny from two mounts, then unbolt it from the block (you'll also need to disconnect the shift linkage and the sensors, but its not hard).
It will take time, if you have that available. It took me 17 hours over 2 days to finish my clutch. I think the most aggravating part was lining the tranny back up to the block, and after that it was the stupid driver's side axle.
The $tealership wanted 1100 in labor to install a clutch, FYI.
Hope this helps. :)

Buckwilly 05-31-2002, 03:18 PM WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!! 500 bucks? 1100 BUCKS!!!! I got mine installed for $150 bucks laboir and it was in my maxima. Please tell me there isnt something more difficult about an se-r. I have never heard of 600-1000 dollars for the clutch and install together. Wow. 300 plus 200 for the install would be what I would guess. NO MORE. Just get it done at a decent local garage.
Da91NX 05-31-2002, 04:01 PM It souldn't cost more than $200 tops. My friend got his done at a garage for $150 in his MX6.
shumax 05-31-2002, 04:45 PM Well that is a bit more reassuring to hear that $150-200 is the norm. I have to admit, I thought $500-600 was awful high, never mind $1,100!!!!
Sounds like I am going to get it done for free thanks to Ben. I will buy him all the pizza and food he wants.
What a great place this site is....an endless source of information and willingness to help!
Thanks!
