While I was at the Dyno the other day this guy had a CRX with a Riding Lawnmower battery. The Cold Crank was 340. It was very light. And he said only cost him $25. Has anybody tried this? Are the lightweight batteries available now for $80+ just riding lawnmower batteries in disguise?

You amaze me. First the power, then this battery. For $25 big ones it would be worth a shot. Florida is'nt really cold enough to test the limits of a battery anway. I would wonder about it's duribility. The high speed vibrations of a car might break it down faster. The DynoBat battery is not a lawnmower battery in disguise, don't know about the others.

Figgy, I am on a little project right now to save weight with my battery. I am so happy my old one died while my car was in storage, time to get a smaller one! I will post the info soon! It will weigh 13 pounds, and be rated to operate a car, so its all good.

Haha, that's my friend Chris. Yeah, they are worth a try, I just have a Miata gell-cell battery...small and light. Probably expensive, too...oh well I didn't pay for it! :D

I used to know a guy that had a Civic hb that had a lawnmower battery in it seemed to work good. It was a street car than ran low 12's all motor.

Shit, the batteries that come in newer civis are mounted up by the firewall on the passengers side and are as small as lawnmower batteries and there is no room to put a bigger one in if you wanted to.

Hey Jon, depending on what you want your car for you might be better leaving your heavier battery there.

Please allow me to explain... You moved your battery to the rear. So you might have a better weight balance if it was heavier. This would help improve your handling.

If you were a drag junkie like I am becoming, then lighter is better so I'd say give it a shot. Heck you might even be able to find a used one at an autoparts store if you are REAL lucky. I used to work at Autozone for my second job a while back and we had them sometimes. Rich dudes would just come in and buy a new one for their John Deers when spring came.

Heres how to check bro. Some shops have four plates that are independent scales. You drive your car up on them and it tells you how much weight you have on each wheel. We are front heavy so like I said it might be better for handling purposes to have that "extra" weight on a rear tire. Just thought I'd throw that out for you pal.

I like the idea though and if you do do it, post your results. You have an audience, Master of all that is Gheto! LOL

Good luck,

What's the Reserve Capacity of the battery?

Michael.

EXCELLENT QUESTION. I was just reading up on batteries and apparently the reserve capacity has to be a certain number of minutes. ( ? )

I will have to visit a battery shop and look at the specs on these.

Any idea what the stock reserve capacity is?

In case others don't know, here's a good read on batteries: http://www.batterycouncil.org/batteries.html

It'll be tricky since most lawnmower or motorcycle batteries are not listed by Cold Cranking amps/Cranking Amps. If you check to see how much current your starter draws you would know what you need from a mower/cycle battery. If you really wanted to, you could bypass the clutch switch and roll start your car all the time and put a dinky ass battery in there. :)

Running a featherweight battery isn't rocket science. Swap it in at the strip and run a normal battery on the street. Some of us have been doing it for years. Keep a JumpStart pack with you at all times.
