Sorry if this is a stupid question... you ARE getting more air into the engine right? So wouldn't that give you better MPG?

I believe they do.. i once got 375 on a full tank. and i think i could have gotten a little more out of it.. maybe like 5 more..
*highway of course*

but some street

I would think it was exactly opposite. You now have the ability to bring in more air, which means the engine can now burn more fuel with that extra air. I would expect mileage to decrease a little, but only when you start bringing in more air than the stock air box (full throttle acceleration, not cruising on the highway)

I saw lower mileage after installing the AEM CAI.
In October 2001 I installed the AEM CAI and changed oil the same day. For the 4 previous tanks I averaged 31.29 mpg.
The first 4 tanks after the CAI the average was 29.90 mpg.
Previous to the AEM, I had the Stillen K&N filtercharger.

I have my mileage graphed since I bought my '93 se-r in 1998.
There's a very distinct pattern with cold weather comes lower
mileage. Colder air = denser oxygen in the air = more fuel burned.

Depends.

If you drive civilized, your mileage will actually increase compared to driving civilized w/o the CAI. Breaths easier at lower rpm's.

If your continiuosly stomping on it, you will actually comsume much more gas than w/o the CAI. Increases air/fuel mixture therefore consuming more fuel.

So, it really goes both ways.

Ah...I see. Thank you wise ones. I *that close* to getting a CAI and just wanted to tell myself there are more rational benefits other then more HP

either way you cant go wrong.. just get one.. :D

The only thing that I've installed that *significantly* increased my mileage was the ECU. Not saying the Headers and pullies didn't help, I just didn't see all that much difference when I installed those. JWT ECU? Different story. ~3mpg improvement (highway mileage)

At first you might get lower miles per gallon because you will love the sound it makes, and you will find yourself constantly stomping it everywhere you go. But with normal driving, you should be fine.

the resaon fuel economy drops in the cold weather is because it takes more gas to warm the engine up from being ice cold as opposed to lukewarm

Damn!!!! how are you guys getting such good mileage, over 350 to a tank, the most ive ever gotten out of my classic was 256 thanks to some freeway driving to and from Seattle!!!!
I usually do all city driving and dont even get 200 to my tank, and i dont romp on it all that much. Thats after a fresh oil change and tune up!!!

Forget the miles per tank talk. Gimme miles per gallon please.

I just got 32.2 mpg with what I think was ~50/50 highway and city. Maybe it was 60/40....

well, I average 21-23mpg, all city driving, but not terribly busy stop and go. just seems really low, but my old 93 NX2K got about the same, a little better though, and my bros old 91 NX2K got around the same too, I'm puzzled on how you guys are getting such good gas mileage.

depends on the stater of tune of the motor, not just the mods. How are the cap, rotor, plugs, wires, O2 sensor, thermostat, timing, etc?

I put about 600 miles a week on my car...70/30 highway/city driving. I get no less than 29 MPG. At first it didnt get that mileage...then I reset the ECU, cleaned MY THROTTLE BODY, ran a bottle of techron, cleaned my CAI charger, and everything else was in great shape. The next tank I was getting the above numbers...it also could be your tires, rims (weight), or several other things. O2 sensors are sometimes a culprit...mine were just replaced when I bought it. My best is 95 percent highway and I got 35 MPG....it was 75 degrees out and I had my 14" stockers on.

Ya, i just put in a new O2 sensor, plugs and wires, cap and rotor.
I cleaned out the throttle body a couple weeks ago, and yesterday i regrounded the MAF. Maybe ill try the thermostat this week. My wheels are actuall really light, lighter than the stock wheels, It had 14" wheels on it when my brother owned it, and it gets better mileage now. My timing is at *17, and i only use Chevron supreme, 92 oct.

Earlier this week i replaced my cracked vacuum hoses with silicone ones. It has not been a full tank yet, but I seem to be getting way better mileage so far. I'll report back after a tank or 2
