Ok guys, I have an opportunity to by a JWT exhaust cam. If I install this in my car, will I have to get a new ecu? Please don't yell at me saying "search first!" Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

OH yes, and I will be getting a 91 intake cam soon also..if this has anything to do with the situation.

It really wouldn't make much sense to just get the exhaus cam. Just stick with the 91 intake cam, and save up your money to get both S3's

Even if I'm getting a 2 month old one for 30 bucks?

I think this would be okay and I believe it is the exhaust cam that gives more HP on the SR20DE anyway. I know people have done this with the stock cams ('91-'93 exhaust cam), but I do not know of anyone running a stock/JWT combo. Make sure there aren't any scratches or chunks out of the cam. If there are, it's toast anyuway. For $30 you can't really go wrong.

Oh, and you don't need the JWT ECU to run the JWT cams. Your idle may be a little lopey, though. I got rid of my S3 cams because that was the case. I think my engine has other issues, though.

Thanks a lot for the help Ben! Cleared it right up. I agree, for 30 I can't go wrong. The cam is in pristine condition. I heard if I retard the timing, I can get rid of the idle problem. Although that is with both cams being JWT. If I have a 91 intake cam and JWT Exhaust cam, what would be the case? Thanks

NXBen, what did you get instead of the S3's? Or did you go back to stock?

I don't think this is true bro. If you advance or retard your timming you will not get rid of the lopey idle. I personally love my idle. The only thing that is proven to get rid of the idle is the JWT ECU with a cam program. But like it was mentioned before for $30 you can not go wrong. Its actually a hell of a deal. You can then buy the intake cam from JWT and WAAAAAAAALAAAAAAA you have both cams. What kind of cam is it? S3'S4 etc........

I'm pretty sure it is an s3. The guy I'm buying it from ran it with stock valve springs so I'm sure its not C4's (thanks martin!). I'm kind of confused as to why he would let it go so cheap...its in great condition. STOLEN GOODS YA! How much does a JWT ECU run for the cam program/etc.?

So you can run some aftermarket cams on the stock ecu? that is cool if you can. Can you still get the same performance out of the cams with the stock ecu?

Yes you can run them with stock ecu, but from what has been posted here and on other posts, I've heard you get more response from the cams if you get the reprogrammed ecu.

Wow, lots of questions here....

I went back to stock cams because I thought I was selling the car (I still have it). The idle was really bad and I hated it. Like I said, I think there is something else wrong with my engine, though. It runs great, but it still misses some at idle. I haven't had a chance to investigate this, but I have replaced the cap and rotor, wires, plugs, and fuel filter. When I get a chance, I'm going to look into it more.

I don't think setting your timing back will help. I also don't think setting your idle to 1000RPM will help because the computer will still try to make it 800RPM. I believe you'll want about 15 degrees BTDC timing with the S3 cams.

The JWT ECU will give you a smoother idle and better throttle response. I believe it will also add a couple of HP. The cost of the ECU with S3 program is around $600. If you have a '98 or newer (I believe '98 is the cut off year), you'll have to monkey with the wiring harness to get the ECU to work.

Alright thanks again! When getting an ecu from JWT do you have to send one to them or do they supply you with a new one? How long does this take? I've heard horror stories about the NOS setup for JWT..hope this won't take as long.

I am not positive on this, but I think that they will charge you a core charge until they receive an ECU from you. So, once you receive the JWT unit and send them your ECU, they will refund the core charge.

I have no idea how long it takes, but I would guess they would have ECUs wired up, so all they need to do is program it and ship it out. I could be wrong, though.
