: Grease on rim?
turbo b13 se-r 05-29-2002, 11:13 PM Dammit I look at my wheel today and there's fucking grease all over it! I replaced the c.v axle like 10 months ago and there's a brand new cv boot on it...only like a month old, and there's grease all over my front drivers side rim! What gives!...the only other explanation I have for this is that maybe my shock is blown?
Sometimes when I make a turn or go over a smal bump I hear a loud click coming from that area...does anyone have any ideas on what the problem could be? thanks.
Rittmeister 05-29-2002, 11:24 PM If you hear clicking during a turn, faster/slower depending on vehicle speed, it's probably the CV joint. If you replaced it that recently I'd guess it's OK, unless it was done incorrectly of course. If you only hear the click/pop/clunk when you hit a bump, there's a good chance it's the strut. Take the wheel off and have a look; also bounce on the fender for a few seconds (with the wheel still on ;)); if the car keeps bouncing after you stop the strut is probably shot.
Hope this helps.
Crono1321 05-30-2002, 12:07 AM I know this is a retarded question, please don't flame me. What is the difference between a strut and a shock? Or are they one and the same? TIA.

Katana200sx 05-30-2002, 12:17 AM to repsond to the strut/shock question..lol i dont know....excpet by the way they look. about the grease on the rim question, i had the same thing happen to me. jack your car up and pull the wheel off and feel around the boot with your fingers and see if it's torn. that is what was wrong with mine.
a shock has two eyes on the ends or some sort of clamp device to mount it on a car were a strut is shock with a spring over it, to make a complete assembly, hope that makes sense
Shoes59 05-30-2002, 12:52 PM The ticking sound you hear is a likely a bad axle. If you replaced the axle 10 months ago with a $75 unit from Pep Boy's or similar parts store then consider yourself lucky it lasted that long. These places use reground components and they simply don't last. You get what you pay for.
Spend the extra $ and buy an axle from Raxles. Tell Marty I sent you.

Race axles? Who makes them? Where did you buy them?
Raxles axles are $150 each and come with a lifetime warranty.

I got mine from Sleeper motorsport and I needed them bad! I would've never made it home to San Diego if didn't get them...they just had them layin around, weren't used though...I'm sure they were raxles though. I dont know. I think I was cruisen around with my front end too low for awhile and that probably contributed to my problem, but I wasn't that low. These axles were made for powerful launches..... Lifetime warranty huh?
Shoes59 05-31-2002, 10:28 AM If you paid $150 for an axle from Sleeper Motorsports I'd recommend talking to them to see about getting a replacement. Especially if they marketed the units as a "racing axles"
Raxles does have a lifetime warranty but not for "racing" applications.
cossieturbo 05-31-2002, 01:37 PM If it's grease then it's the CV no question. If it's a thin oil film, it's either the shock or the bearing seal.

LogicalRetard 06-03-2002, 10:08 AM You can't always tell a bad axle by just clicking alone. The clicking does not start until it is worn down badly. Both mine have both boots on both sides torn wide open, and still no clicking.....yet.
Horus 06-03-2002, 10:20 AM Ok, But it you have one starting to make noise do you replace the one or do you do both even though the boot on the other is intact and strong?
Changing my oil yesterday I can across this horror too. I thought it was a tire getting a little loud. But it’s a torn boot and i'm guessing the joint might be making the noise. :(
What is the right thing to do?
Katana200sx 06-03-2002, 10:47 AM you can replace them seperately. although about a month after i replaced my left side axle, the right side tore a boot.
cossieturbo 06-03-2002, 11:52 PM Yah, that's how it goes. 1st one side then shortly after, the other side goes. Drives me nuts. I little secret for longer boot life. Bypass Nissan and get the thicker walled boots from Pep-boys (or similar) that are made in our grand country America. They last a LOT longer do to the thicker walls. See, even though most American cars are shyte some of the parts are not.
