: How to get new headlights.
dougnosser 05-30-2002, 04:33 PM First of all, thanks Matt, and figgy for your help. I started a thread called "how do you clean your headlights?" Matt and figgy responded and I took both of their ideas and now my headlights are like brand spanking new!!!!!!!!!! Here is a list of what I used so that all of you guys with discolored headlights can make yours look just as good.
Materials:
3M 1000 grit sandpaper
3M 1500 grit sandpaper
3M 2000 grit sandpaper
3M Rubbing compound
3M Finishing compound
water
I started by just spraying water on the headlight with water I had put in a windex bottle. Using the 1000 grit I rubbed slowly , but firmly in circles while constantly applying more water. To this until it is nice and hazy. I repeated the steps for the 1500 grit and 2000 grit. Then I used the rubbing compound with a damp terry cloth to apply. Pressing very firmly I rubbed in cirlces evenly across the headlight. I then used a dry towel and applied the finisher with the same circular motions. I then wiped the headlights clean, and whala! They look brand new! Thanks guys for all of your help. I spent a total of 20.95 on those supplies from Pep Boys.
200sx-97-SE-R 05-30-2002, 05:26 PM nice, I might just have to try that out.
thanx:D
Hawaii_SE-R 05-30-2002, 05:28 PM Thanks for the step by step. Event though I now have the Tsuru headlights, I'll try it on my stock headlights so that when I get the new used SE-R in a few months, I can swap in the new old headlightsfor the old old headlights.
Sentra Styling 05-30-2002, 06:40 PM Hmm insteresting,,,I'll have to try this on my classics...

YEAH!!! You're welcome, my man!!!!
Im glad you made the BRAVE step to do it. It is very intimidating at first to start sanding your lenses. Its even crazier when plastic goo is everywhere from the plastic dust mixing with water when you are sanding. Mine came out great as well. I JUST CANT FIND MY DAMN DIGICAM!!! Im so pissed!!
I recommend this "quick fix" to everyone. Just please have the two compounds needed to finish the job.
Sr20kidD 05-31-2002, 12:45 AM can you tell me the name of the compounds and where you got them..
i want to do this.. but i dont want to get the wrong kind..
i did my car this past weekend with the clay bar and let me just say WTF new paint job?? its like WHOA!! hehe.. eben (fobby) though..i havent waxed it yet.. it still looks good.. i also used the clay bar on the lights. they look better than they did **.. so it works but i only did it a little while..

I used whatever I had lying around and it ended up being:
Turtle Wax Scratch Remover
and
Meguiars Gold Class Wax.

eliterit 06-01-2002, 01:30 AM since reading this thread earlier today i went out to pepboys and got what i needed to do this. except for the 1500 paper and the finishing compound. It made a hell of a difference and now i can look at the front of my car comfortably. I just want to ask one question: Does the finishing compound that cost 10 bucks actually make even more of a difference than just using the rubbing compound??
Thanks for the how to, i've been waiting for this thread.
dougnosser 06-01-2002, 11:07 AM The answer to your question is yes. That finshing compound is like a 3000 grit liquid sandpaper. I was ready to stop at the rubbing compund and return that 8.99 bottle of finsher, but I'm glad I didn't. It did make a noticeable difference. I'm glad everyone is trying it out. Figgy, If we ever meet remind me to give you a big hug.(j/j) Matt4nissan is actually coming over to day to pick up my exhaust so I'll have a witness!
Crono1321 06-01-2002, 03:02 PM Are you sanding down the outside or inside of the light? How the hell do you get the plastic cover off to sand it down if it is on the back where you have to sand!?? I tried taking mine off to no avail when I was going to clean them a month or so ago..

eliterit 06-01-2002, 05:09 PM Well i took back the rubbbing compound and go tthe finishing compound to finish up the job. Here are the after pics, sorry, but i didnt get any good before pics. Once again thanks for the how-to.

It looks great.
Now I see why I took off my fog-lights.
It looks like a rabbit. No offense. Just my personal opinion on Classic foglights.
That does look real nice! Who says good advice and hardwork don't pay off? Congrats man.
