Does anybody know of a CAI that doesn't require sheet metal cutting? I was thinking if I moved my battery to the trunk and took out the tray it would provide a nice big hole for a CAI. Sheet metal cutting is a no no in STS.

How about relocate your battery to the trunk, like you said. Then buy a short stack intake, then build a custom wall between the intake and the engine. In other word you will have a nice little compartment for your intake to suck in cold air, while the wall blocks all that heat coming off the engine.

I've seen pictures before and they also had it on the "Project SE-R" by Sport Compact Car.

All of them require cutting sheet metal to install the CAI. John Moore in Chicago somehow got his to fit. I'm not sure how he did it, since I have his old Place Racing intake before he went with the HotShot part. I'll see if I have his email address for you.

whats the big deal about enlarging the hole??? if you don't have the equipment, all it takes is a metal file and a set of pliers.

He wants to run STS class in SCCA and that does not allow for cutting ANY sheet metal on the car. I'm sure he COULD do it, but it would be illegal. If he is competative, people will protest him.

Navy Corpsman, are you stationed in SD?

If so check out http://sdr-solo2.com

You can get the schedule for their autocrosses.

My Sig pic was taken there at the "Q"

they're the same. same diameter, same bends. different colors, that's about it.

Hey, we were just talkin bout him over in 'race forum'
--->http://www.sr20deforum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19348

I dunno if i should kontakt him or simply go seem him run next time he's local (of course joining in the fray myself).
Kinda lookin at the same issues. STS legality, i was about to complete my PRI intake install. Thinkin i still might do it and just block off the hole if i go run STS style. Say i did the mod before i was aware of the rules. My car is a bit of a beater too, so i can allways play it off as a rust repair. =P

Next you'll tell me my AD22VFs are illegal as well. 0=D

Art,
like Nismo sez, the batt relo w/ a shield is what you should do. I've seen the SCC article as well and they did Dyno to confirm that it makes power. IIRC not good as the AEM but much better than just a WAI. Not to mention, the batt relo is both legal and 'it's a good thing' (call me Martin F**kin Stewart) for weight distr.

BTW still got A/C on the cone hound?

The HS and PR for the high port are different, the pipe on the HS comes up a lot higher than the PR. The diameter of the pipe is the same though, 3".

On the low port, the HS is 1 or 2 inches shorter on both pipes. I had a PR with the JWT POP, and it barely fit. The HS fits with room to spare.

I've disconnected the A/C but not removed it yet. Can't make up my mind and waiting to see what the 100 degree commutes this summer are going to be like.

I am personally leaning towards making my own custom CAI with a different routing down through the hole you get when you remove your battery tray. I'll make a bracket that goes across and supports the Fuse tray and a CAI. I just need to find a place where I can get the tubing.

Place racing and Hotshot are different. The PR has a nice machined aluminum adapter for the MAF. The HS has welded steel one that I thought was poor fitting and returned. Some others I have spoken with have had the same impression. I just bought an adapter for my VE install from PR cost about $33 including shipping. Very nice piece. Here is link to making your own CAI on a Honda. The principal is the same on all cars. JC whittney has the tubing. The link explains it all. I would chose 2.5 inch tubing on a sr20de. That is what AEM does and theirs is considered the best. HS uses 3 inch tubing and I think PS does the same. Look at the K+N site for a filter with a built in velocity stack. These little things are what is missing from the PR and HS CAI. If you haven't noticed I think you are better off making your own then spending $200 on a poorly made one. Also, use a tapered filter.
