hey, i just wanted to know how the hell we get our shiftknobs off. i thought we just had to screw them off, but i want to make sure because i dont want to damage the shifter in anyway. ive made a small attempt and it feels really on there.

info anybody can give is appreciated.:D

Put a towl around it and use vice grips to turn it. Nissan used some sort of glue also, so it is tough to break it free the first time. The towl and vice grips make it very easy.

Nissan uses Loc-Tite or something similar.
Better have a new one to replace it with just in case the old one gets FUBARd.

yah, im ***** replace it with an aftermarket one when i get it. i was just messing with it today to see how easy/hard it would be later.

i really dont care bout the old one on there now, so yah ill try some vicegrips, the only thing i was worried about hurting is the stickpart itself and what its connected to. should i be worried about this when twisting the hell out of it to get it loose?

naw....just twist it off. there arent any set screws to keep it in place like some aftermarket knobs...just worry about twisting the leather off. that's what happened to mine.

I have just evently sone two short shifter installs and on both cars I wound up having to use a razor knife to cut it off.

Cut the leather along the seam.
Make a slit vertically down the rubber underneath and then peal the rubber back.
After you get the rubber off there is a plastic peice that actually has the threads on it. use a pair of vise grips and this will come right off this way.

If you aren't going to keep the old knob, this is the easiest way to deal with it.

I took a hack saw and cut just below the knob (I cut about 1" below). This shortened the shift throw and does not take too long to get use to. I love it. Looks a million times better also!!!! :) It will take about 1/2 hour or so to get through the steel though. Make sure you wrap a towel or sheet around the base so you don't have metal shavings all over the place. I'll look for pics of my chop job. Just an idea. ;)

Cossie

NOTE: You can always cut off more so start just below the knob.

:) thanx for all the info guys, its all just what i wanted to hear.

hey cossie, so doing that would officially make it a shortshifter? is that all the PS one is? the same bend and everything just a little shorter than stock...is this true? if so im not wasting my money on the PS one. i always thought they did something to the angle aswell?

can anybody whos switched theirs out verify this....did the factory and PS short shifter have the exact same angle just the pacesetter one was a little shorter

By cutting it you are effectively creating a short shift, but it will be lower then the kit you can buy on the market. The ones on the market do have the same kink or bend as the factory ones. The height will very on the adjustable ones depending upon where you set the threads. One little detail to think about. Most persons don't realize that by speeding up the shifting you increase the wear on the baulk rings (sliding on the synchros). I just added some good old Red Line MT90 to help combat this issue. You can cut, but only if your not a super tall bloke. I'm about 5'10" and it took me a little bit of time to get comfortable with the new height. It now measures just under 7" from the top of the ball to the top of the shift knob.

Well if you really want to know, what Cossie did was considered shortening a shifter. He has a shortened shifter now. The PS adjustable ones do not change the overall length like cossie did. They change the distance form th pivot on the bottom to the ball on the dhift rod. A short shifter will have a longer distance between the pivot point and the ball.

This brings up a raging debate about what is better so i will try and sum up a lifetime of arguments for you here as best i can.

Shortened stock shifter:
Easy to do.
Drops the shift knob down lower
Reduces the distance between gears because it is shorter.
Some people have complained of increased effort with a shortened stock shifter due to less leverage.

Short shifter.
Little more difficult to install
shift know remains in the same place.
Reduces the distance between gears because of better leverage.
No increase in effort for the most part (I have heard of a few instances where there was but personally i think they had other problems.)

Go with what ya like. I am not gonna make up your mind for ya, but there are most of the facts now.

:D yah, i think ill go with the better leverage deal and wait for the PS. both are good ideas, but like you said, it depends on what your going for. thanks for the added info on the ps shifter!

Quick question for ya cossie.
i'm not really interested in wasteing the time and money on a short shifter because the shifting length really dosen't bother me, and the less money i spend now the quicker i will be able to go turbo.
but i hate that massive tower of a shifter!
i am completely ready to cut down the rod but how exactly did you reattach a new knob? i haven't put much thought into this and i'm sure i could come up with a way but its always nice to find out what other people have done.
TIA
peace
Dan

Are the NISMO prices reasonable?

I haven't priced anything yet. But since they will have Nissan P/Ns you can use your SERCA/SE-R.net discount from Courtesy Nissan or Mossy Nissan.

Cutting your shifter does not make it a short shifter. All it does it drop the ball down lower. My car did have a stock cut shifter on it and the ball would just wiggle and fall off all the time. It sux unless you can rethread it.
The throws are alot shorter with the PS that I have now and there is a very noticable difference between the 2. The height of the PS is shorter than stock also.
