: Mandrel Bends from Jegs??
shumax 06-02-2002, 12:21 PM I am trying to piece together my exhaust and have questions. I am getting the Dynomax cat in the 14" size along with the Dynomax glaspak in 14" size. I am curious if I can order the JEGS stainless steel mandrel bends in the link and have a muffler shop cut them to make them work on the two major curves we have after the resonator and before the rear flange in front of the axle.
What do you think?
If I do it, I think I would need two of the "J" bends in 2.25 varienty as the cat and the glasspak are going to be 2.25.
Any thoughts on all of this?

shumax 06-02-2002, 02:49 PM If it's a bother to you to post, then don't do it. I used the "search feature" and found nothing that SPECIFICALLY related to the use of Jeg's mandrel bend parts.
Honestly, sometimes I think the search function should dissappear. You never know who might have joined since a post in the search feature was posted. Therefore, new people might have some input or others who never saw the original post might have something to add. Again, goes back to this:
You have some useful knowledge as you have done this to your car and I apprecaite that. However, you also seem irritated by having to post "search results" that date back as far as a year ago. If it bothers you that much, don't post.
Thanks!

You're exactly right, Curt. Why make a post, then wait one or two days for somebody to reply, when the answer is less than 10 minutes away?
Mandrel bends are mandrel bends. It doesn't matter where they come from. I found that exhaust post, from last year, in less than 5 minutes. It has all the answers you could want, regarding exhaust setups and mandrel bends.
Yes, many of us have been here a while and have hashed (and re-hashed) many of these topics over and over again. There's literally hundreds of posts on custom exhaust setups, just there for the picking. When I did my exhaust recently for the turbo, I never once posted, asking what this and what that. Instead, I spent maybe 30 minutes searching, and came up with all the answers I needed. And then some.

shumax 06-02-2002, 06:35 PM The name's Curt.
Anyway, my answer wasn't "5 or 10min away" because it's still not answered by your search results. I want to know if the ones on the link I gave would be enough----would they work? I am NOT asking of their quality, or if they are any good. I want to know if they are the right degree of bend and if they will work on OUR cars.
Since you have time---dig that up for me on the search feature.:D

Hey Curt, could you be a bit more rude? I think you should take a look at your expectation level, and kick it down a few notches. Greg tried to help, and you reply like that? What do you expect, to be spoon fed?
I used the "search feature" and found nothing that SPECIFICALLY related to the use of Jeg's mandrel bend parts.
Of course you didn't. First of all, there's no such thing as Jeg's mandrel bend parts. Take another look at the page, they're made by Hooker/Dynomax, and they're no different than any other mandrel bend pieces. It's just a pipe with a bend.
Honestly, sometimes I think the search function should dissappear.
Really? That's about the dumbest thing I've ever heard. I use the search here, and on SE-R mailing daily. Today was a perfect example, my buddy calls me and asks if his alternator is bad because his brake light and battery light are on. I could have easily found through a search that the alternator was bad, but since I'm an SE-R GOD  I knew the answer. But just to prove a point to you, I just did the search, with the following phrase, battery and brake light on, and Heavens to Murgatroid, look at the results http://www.sr20deforum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11311&highlight=battery+and+brake+light+on
The FIRST thread at the top of the search had the answer I needed. Anyway, since I already knew the answer (remember, I'm an SE-R GOD), and that Andreas Miko had starters and alternators for sale, I now needed to find the For Sale post from Andre, so what do I do? Wanna take a guess? Search on starter[i], and partial name of [i]Andreas. Once again, the search works perfectly, the second match was what I needed. Still think the search should be removed? Hmmmmm?
You never know who might have joined since a post in the search feature was posted. Therefore, new people might have some input or others who never saw the original post might have something to add. Again, goes back to this:
So. Does that mean that Greg shouldn't have answered your question with a link to a thread which he thought was helpful? That doesn't stop someone else from chiming in with their thoughts.
You have some useful knowledge as you have done this to your car and I apprecaite that. However, you also seem irritated by having to post "search results" that date back as far as a year ago. If it bothers you that much, don't post.

Curt, you’re a new guy here, and ask allot of questions. Nothing wrong with that, but don’t expect the world, and don’t be so touchy.

curt,
you post a message looking for some help/advise and them someone points you to a link and you bitch. do everyone a favor, grow up and shut up! :D

No, they will not work out of the box. Any mandrel bends you buy will need to be custom cut to fit your car.
I am NOT asking of their quality, or if they are any good. I want to know if they are the right degree of bend and if they will work on OUR cars.
http://www.jegs.com/photos/52012530.jpg
Take a good look at the picture above, those are 180 degree bends. Read the text from Jeg's page Available in 180° 8-gauge U & J bends and 180° stainless steel J-bends come in many combinations of radius, tube diameter and length. Have you taken a look under your car? How the heck are 180 degree bends going to work?
The bigger question is this; can you find a muffler shop that will do the work using your parts? Some will and some won't. As I was once told by a mechanic, "You wouldn't walk into a diner with your own eggs and ask them to make you an omlet would you?"
Since you have time---dig that up for me on the search feature.:D

My mistake on your name. It's hard to reply when you're in a rush. I corrected the mistake in that post, btw.
Here's a post I linked you to in one of your other posts about resonators/mufflers:

Click on that, and read the very first post. Everything you need to know is in there, regarding exhaust systems for our cars. Even the specific question you have about specific mandrel bends is in there. Have at it.

Sorry you read into that comment the wrong way, bud. I wasn't bitching. Rather trying to make a point that sometimes the search results don't yield what you are looking for. As I mentioned above, I didn't feel my question was answered.
Thanks for the input though.
shumax 06-02-2002, 08:17 PM Hey Curt, could you be a bit more rude? I think you should take a look at your expectation level, and kick it down a few notches. Greg tried to help, and you reply like that? What do you expect, to be spoon fed?
Did I ask to be spoon fed? No. I asked a question that I didn't feel was answered. Then I felt attacked by the "search gods." In a way, it's like you are made fun of for asking a question that could have been brought up 2 years ago. What's funny to me is that some people assume I haven't searched for it. It's funny because I have and have more questions--simple as that! To police it, I have found that if I say I have already searched and have more questions....people chill out on the search feature. Imagine that...
Of course you didn't. First of all, there's no such thing as Jeg's mandrel bend parts. Take another look at the page, they're made by Hooker/Dynomax, and they're no different than any other mandrel bend pieces. It's just a pipe with a bend.
Good point. I wasn't specific enough. I meant to say the pipes on the JEGS site.

So. Does that mean that Greg shouldn't have answered your question with a link to a thread which he thought was helpful? That doesn't stop someone else from chiming in with their thoughts.
Did I say that he shouldn't? No.
You have some useful knowledge as you have done this to your car and I appreciate that. However, you also seem irritated by having to post "search results" that date back as far as a year ago. If it bothers you that much, don't post.
You didn't take the time to comment on this part, why? I thanked him for his effort but also pointed out that he seemed irritated by my asking the question. When you put a smiley with eyes up in the air I think one can reasonably deduce that they mean they are "rolling their eyes" at the person. If that means I am "reading into it too much"---well sorry.
Are you having a bad day by any chance? You've read an awful lot into his message. Is it because he put a little  at the end of his post? If that's it, then you're way to sensitive..
No, actually I am having a good day--thanks for your concern though. I just get tired of getting "hit" with the "search feature." It's reasonable to assume that everytime I post, I have already done a search for my answer. I only ask more questions as I see fit.
Curt, you’re a new guy here, and ask allot of questions. Nothing wrong with that, but don’t expect the world, and don’t be so touchy.
Touchy? I think you have read into it too much, bud. In fact, I venture to say that you are more worked up over this than anyone. I just sit back and laugh. It was never my intent to anger anyone---god.
shumax 06-02-2002, 08:23 PM No, they will not work out of the box. Any mandrel bends you buy will need to be custom cut to fit your car.
Hey, thanks!
Take a good look at the picture above, those are 180 degree bends. Read the text from Jeg's page Available in 180° 8-gauge U & J bends and 180° stainless steel J-bends come in many combinations of radius, tube diameter and length. Ahhh....if a shop cuts off the piece you need---the bend--one would assume it would work, right Chris? Oh yea, I spent 30min. under my car looking at it. Couldn't find anything in "search" about someone buying mandrel bends and having them cut to fit in place----so I asked here.
The bigger question is this; can you find a muffler shop that will do the work using your parts? Some will and some won't. As I was once told by a mechanic, "You wouldn't walk into a diner with your own eggs and ask them to make you an omlet would you?"
If the shop doesn't have eggs, I don't feel bad asking to bring my own. What I mean is that most shops don't have a mandrel machine---too expensive. If I ask and they don't have the machine, I don't feel one bit bad asking to bring my own supplies/equipment.
There's that rude thing again.
Dang nabbit...you got me. I was being a prick there;)

Curt, you’re a new guy here, and ask allot of questions. Nothing wrong with that, but don’t expect the world, and don’t be so touchy.
Touchy? I think you have read into it too much, bud. In fact, I venture to say that you are more worked up over this than anyone.
Oh absolutely, I am more worked up over this than you, and with good reason. There are allot of great people here, but we all need to realize that our words and attitudes have meaning, and we shouldn't talk any differently to each other here than if we were face to face. Just because you didn't get the exact answer you wanted is no excuse for you to answer with "If it's a bother to you to post, then don't do it."
I've read allot of questions from you over the last few weeks, that's cool, and that's one of the reasons this is such a great place, and you've probably had every one of those questions answered (some of those answers came from me), but that doesn't mean you should expect it 100% of the time.
I just sit back and laugh. It was never my intent to anger anyone---god.
I'm glad you find it amusing.

No. I don't interpret as an attack. I interpreted it as someone who was annoyed with my asking a question under the assumption I hadn't already searched for the answer.
I was rude there, true. The more I wrote, the more I got annoyed. I didn't detect any sarcasm your statement of "Honestly, sometimes I think the search function should dissappear."
Well, I guess that's a matter of interpretation then as I meant it in a sarcastic way. You read it as an attack against the search feature.
Oh absolutely, I am more worked up over this than you
This isn't necessarily a good thing, Chris.
There are a lot of great people here, but we all need to realize that our words and attitudes have meaning, and we shouldn't talk any differently to each other here than if we were face to face.
Trust me, had I felt Greg was rolling his eyes at me in person, I would have called him out on it. I am not suggesting I would be rude about it, but I would want to know why he felt he needed to role his eyes.
Just because you didn't get the exact answer you wanted is no excuse for you to answer with "If it's a bother to you to post, then don't do it."
Once again Chris, it's a matter of interpretation. I didn't mean to be rude about it.
I've read allot of questions from you over the last few weeks, that's cool, and that's one of the reasons this is such a great place, and you've probably had every one of those questions answered (some of those answers came from me), but that doesn't mean you should expect it 100% of the time.
I never suggested in any of my posts that I expect an answer 100% of the time. I do thank you and all of the others who have helped though.
I'm glad you find it amusing.
Hey--that comment could be taken 2 ways, Chris. It's amuzing to me that you would get that worked up in a public forum about something that could be perceived two ways. I have said at least twice that my intent wasn't to flame or abuse Gregs knowledge or longevity on the board. Yet you took it on yourself to use a public forum to confront me about they way you perceived I was treating Greg. Why not email me and inquire of my intent with my message to Greg?
Again, let's just put this to reat already. I never meant to sound like I was attacking Greg. I pointed out my intent and made it clear what I was thinking. Let bygons be bygons already...
