: Right Front Lock Up

Under extreme braking, my front right will lock up. I'm sick of having to pedal it when racing. I don't have ABS and glad I don't, the ABS system that came on the B13's suck (the opposite corner set-up....horrid on the auto-x). Anyways, what would be a good solution for this? Would a proportioning valve work for right/left set-up, cause to my knowledge they are engineered stricktly for front/rear set-ups. Thanks!

I would take your calipers off and look for a torn boot, a sticking piston, or caliper pin not sliding. If it didn't do this new (obviously not) then something has worn out. It's maintenance time. You need to look at both sides. The bad one may be the one that isn't locking up. After, you do this bleed the brakes the brakes and test again. If everything is ok and it is only under at the limit braking, I would consider the pads next. One could be glazed to heat damaged in some way. Rotate pads from one side to the next see if it changes sides.

I had this problem with stock calipers. Solution was new caliper pins. I am guessing the extreme heat generated by the smallish brakes on road courses bent the pins slightly. ~$30 for all of them from the dealer. Yeah, a little pricey, but better than a flatspotted/corded $100 Kumho.....

All great ideas. It sounds like the front calipers need to be checked. When I had odd braking similar to yours, I took everything apart and only looked it over quick. Nothing!!!! GRRRRR... well I just did the rear bearings and noticed that the "rear inner pad pin" that goes in the piston notch was not in the notch, but on the piston surface. It had been that way for a long long time. Now I don't know if it was the bearings or this little problem, but I did notice uneven pad wear on that side. Something this simple could be your problem. My odd brake problem is now gone. It's been like that for years as I only had to change the rear pads once since 1993.

Oh yeah, I forgot to insert that last week I was doing a little motoring :D and at the end of the "session", the front left caliper/pad was pouring out smoke.

So, are you guys talking about the caliper slider pins that are on each side of the caliper?

Nope, not me. I'm talking about the small nipple (yes, I finally used the word nipple :)) on the inner pad its self was causing uneven hard braking due to the piston not seating properly on the pad. I hope I explained that clearly.

Yes

Alright, last question. So which side should I replace these pins on?

Don't worry, it's not how the pads are seated, I double checked on that.....thanks though.

Your going to need to take them off and see which are not sliding well. It will probably be fairly easy to tell by just comparing the ease of movment from one side to the next. Don't forget the caliper pin grease (check a manual or something on were to put the grease).
