Just wondering, how many of the SE-L owners out there replaced their shifters or knobs and what kind you guys are using.

From what I know, you need to use a lot of force to unscrew them (yes, they actually unscrew) :)

I don't know why Nissan made the SE's with such long shifters, but oh well...

I use a pacesetter short shifter with the stock knob

I tore some of the material off of my knob. You need to take a towel and some kind of vice grip or strong adjustable wrench and put it on the shifter and then twist. Even with the towel there it still ruined some of the fabric, but the whole reason you're removing it is to replace it so it's not a big deal.

so maybe i should just remove the stock knob, and just replace it with some aftermarket one, but i dont think it will cut the shifter's size by a lot...

i'm not looking for a 6" shifter, just looking into shortening that hot dog

Another good way to remove the knob is to take the entire shifter off, wrap the knob in a towel really well and then park a car on it. Use a car that does not have low profile tires. More flex in the tire.

man, i tried my hardest to not ruin my shifter knob, but in the end the leather gave in. i have the smc shifter w/ a trust knob. my advice to you: don't ever buy a knob made out of metal!! it gets VERY hot after the sun has baked it for a few hours.

no, the stock knob is covered in leather. when i was tryin' to twist the knob off w/ a pair of vice grips and a towel, the leather started to rip.

when i tried taking it off, the leather would twist, but not the actual threaded part.

I did this using the front end of a minivan. The knob didn't twist ;)

Guess what. I just replaced my stock knob with Sparco Leather. It is actually very nice and defiantly worth the 10 bucks over the stock knob. Also, My knob came off with just a good twist:) .
You could also use this knob as a way to shorten your stock height. It doesn't use the threads on the shifter just has three set screws on the bottom. Stock it is about 1/4-inch lower then stock. You could cut 1 inch off the stock rod and fiddle with the height up and down by 1/2 to the 1 inch lower. I may try this.

$10 over the $35 you would pay for the leather Nissan knob.

Well i believe that there was a thing listing a "Sport Package" on my window sticker, but i could be wrong. I just remember something about sport suspension and package what ever.

Anways i wasn't sure if all SE-L's came like that so i thought i would put it in. Although now that i think of it, i bet all the 99 SE-L are the same just different colors :) Did they have one without the sunroof?

Just get a B&M short shifter from Nopi. $139.00, expensive I know, but it comes with a shift knob.

yeap, sport tuned suspension, the se-l comes with those ghetto rims, se-l floormats, and also, not a lot of people notice that, but the taillights dont have yellow in them :) also that carbon fiber thing in back, lol

my car came with a sunroof too, full power, 110 watt stereo with cass/cd...

what are your times with those mods?
