Good stater information... here is a more specific question: is it worth stepping up from S3s to S4s on a IHEP + ECU upgraded highport?

Chris you do realize this was two years ago.

Also just for anyone that wants to know I have had all 3 sets of cams.
S3s are great cams. They are awesome for a mild daily driver.
S4s are great cams. They work great in turbo cars and great in N/A cars.
No springs and retainers needed. And they are the best bolt-on for the SR20 motor.
S5s are JUNK. Dont buy them they break the factry springs. I wouldnt take a free set.

I know, but he edited it last month. I was prompted by a PM from a member asking what happened.

what about s5's with springs and retainers?

i wouldn't run after market cams without em' but thats just my personal choice.

well this sucks, here I have S3 cams, and I was thinking about going with something else maybe, as i will probably only see 155 hp at the wheels..

maybe I'll just stick with the S3 cams.. 155 on a 2500 lbs car should be plenty fun for me.

How long have you run the S4's with factory springs and retainers? Im looking for cams at the moment and am wondering whether or not to upgrade the S's and R's.

I ran s4's on stock s/r for almost 2 years. Never had a problem. Before that I had S3's for about a year. IMO here is the difference between 3's and 4's on a non boosted car:

S3 cams will be stronger than S4's below about 5000 rpm. Above that S3's will be better than stock, but not as strong as the S4's will be. S4 cams will be about the same as stock to maybe 4000 and then they will pull away. S4's make the most power in the 5-7k range.

So if this is a daily driver and you only occasionally really romp on it, you might be better off with S3's. If you are always running up to 6000+, you'll be happier with S4's. If you want the best of everything, save your money and get a VE.

Hope this helps

I think it's going to depend on your turbo size and how many PSI you're running, and what results you're looking for.... low end torque? linear torque curve with high rpm power? all top end?

this would be really cool if you also included all OE cams for the car too.. and doesn't Toda make cams for our cars?

The setup would b a de+t with a t/28 and my hp goal is 280ish with no more than 12psi of boost.

Ha as long as we get there in the end.

I have always wondered about the Japanese cams vs JWT and BC's. There is so much less experience with the Japanese Cams.

yeah the JWT cams are so easy to come by used.. I have a set of S3's but I'm thinking of upgrading to S5's while I wait to build another motor

I have a RR motor and B15 transmission sitting in a garage in KC waiting for me to do something with it.
