: Valve Cover Polished$$$
silverser99 06-04-2002, 03:01 AM How much did you guys pay to get your valve cover polished??? I gotta see if Im getting a good deal or just getting jerked around
I'll disclose the price I was quoted after I hear some of yours. This post is only for people who had paid to get theirs polished not for people who did it themselves
Stiletto 06-04-2002, 07:43 AM valve cover polishing items: $30
3/8" Skil corded drill: $36
hours of sweating over that damn vc: worthless
chrome plating vc: priceless (well, $80 actually)

LOL
FastNX 06-04-2002, 12:58 PM I can have it done for 100 bux canadian like 60 bux us + shipping...
98sr20ve 06-04-2002, 01:31 PM Why do people choose to polish instead of chrome. The chrome looks great and does'nt fade over time. The polish requires constant upkeep. This is one of those things I have always wondered about.

ak555 06-04-2002, 02:01 PM I tried to find someone who would chromeplate the valve cover for me. But they wouldn't because of the stuff on the underside of the valve cover. Guess that stuff wouldn't like the chrome dipping.

You are right, the chrome does look great, but I have seen at least 2 SR20 valve covers that have been chromed, and they started to chip. Maybe they werent done right, or whatever, but fact remains, they can start chipping.
I just finished polishing a vc, and I wouldnt say its worthless, it came out very nice looking. And I didn't spend anywhere near $60 for materials...maybe $20 the most.

i forget where, but i read once that since the vc's are made out of a porous metal, they are designed to expand/contract w/ heating/cooling. by chroming it, you cover the pores and retain more heat internally. somehow this translates to more wear or shorter life for the engine. but after seeing countless race engines covered in chrome goodies, i figure it can't be that detrimental.
on the flip side, if for whatever reason, my chrome gets scratched, i have to re-chrome the whole thing. whereas if it were simply polished, i could buff out a scratch.

not the whole underside gets chrome on it. mostly the edge. if the shop is any good they can dip it w/o getting it on the inside.
Crono1321 06-04-2002, 03:34 PM I just think chrome looks cheap, especially when you can get a nice shiny aluminum look instead. I know someone quoted $100 to get mine quoted. Instead I paid around $10 for supplies. I had a drill already though.
NissanGuy01 06-04-2002, 11:28 PM polishing the valve cover....hmm...new project to start considering I now have 2 vc's...one that is kinda gold looking and one that is metal looking....anyone else have the goldish tint vc with the black stuff by the spark plugs? btw, its not dirt there either..

CharlieH98 06-05-2002, 09:27 AM I've got a gold one one that was burned. Looks like the engine caught fire! I cleaned it up, but it's not good enough to use everyday. Anyway, this sucker was burnt on the bottom and the sealant is messed up. It's ok for temporary while yours gets finished.
I'll ship it to anyone who needs a loaner, while their's is getting polished, coated, chromed, whatevered......on the promise that when they are done with it that they will send it to the next person who asks free of charge (like I will) and so on and so on...and so on.....
PM me if you want the cover. First come -- first serve.
Cheers,
Charlie :)
silverser99 06-06-2002, 01:21 AM Anyway the dude quoted me 125 bucks to polish it for me he owns a polishing shop. Judging by the prices you guys were quoted this guy wants to much
RySE-R 1 06-06-2002, 09:32 PM I know someone quoted $100 to get mine quoted.
Dayamn! That's a lot to pay just for a quote!;)
Anyway, has anyone just tried using a colored hihg-temp enamel and painted their VC red or some other color? What kind of results would you get with that?

It will be gorgeous. Someone with a det did that in red. It looks great. Keep in mind it is just paint. You can compound and polish the paint after it dries really well. Check this out
here (http://www.sr20deforum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=16564&highlight=ignore). Ask him, but I thought he used Hi-temp paint.
Crono1321 06-07-2002, 12:28 AM OOPS! Sorry about that it was probably late when I was writing that after a lot of work. If not, I was just not thinking when I was thinking...
TYPING Just kidding!
