: Broken clutch disc?

So I was cruising at 25 mph and suddenly the engine revs up as if I had pushed the clutch in. There wasn't any sound of parts breaking...the engine just simply became disengaged from the tranny, as pressing on the accelerator did nothing but rev the engine up. I pull over to the side of the road and here's what I find:

- the engine idles, and revs, like normal. Nothing weird there.
- the clutch cable is fine and it moves the clutch arm through its entire range of movement. The clutch pedal effort is normal.
- I can shift the transmission through every gear with or without the engine running, with no irregular effort required on either the clutch pedal or the shifter.
- no matter what gear I select, engaging the clutch does not move the car if the engine is running, and when the engine is not running, having the car in gear doesn't prevent the car from rolling.
- there are no puddles or leakage of tranny fluid.

The clutch is a JWT pressure plate with a stock disc that I've been running for about 7 years, and my suspicion is that the clutch disc is broken, but I suppose it could also be something broken inside the tranny. That seems unlikely though, considering there aren't any weird noises at all...I figure it'd sound like rocks in a blender if that was it. I'm using Redline Shockproof Heavy, BTW.

I haven't taken the car apart yet, and I'm sure I'll have the answer when I do, but I was just wondering if this has happened to anyone else, or if anyone has an educated guess.

This is kind of what happend to my brother. He was on the highway and was playing around downshifted to 4th, floored it, shifted to 5th and nothing. Pulled over and the engine would idle fine, no issues at all. I recently went and pulled the tranny for him and it turned out that the middle of the clutch disc (ACT unsprung 6 puck) had been sheered off. It was completely rounded off so that right there did not let the car go anywhere. I replaced it with a new ACT clutch and everything is fine so far (knock on wood). I think you should just look into a new clutch disc.

Just to follow up here...

I dropped the tranny this last weekend and sure enough, the OEM disc had failed. All the rivets connecting the hub to the outer section had sheared off, so I'm going to replace it with an ACT Street Disc.

I think the JWT PP I've got in there is fine. It's about 7 years old, but it doesn't show any signs of giving out.
