: '96 SR20 disassembly
eric96ser 06-04-2002, 11:27 AM Started taking the car apart last night. In my quest to find out why I have low compression in one cylinder, I started to take the car apart. The only thing that gave me any trouble is the knock sensor connector. I don't have enough room to pull the clip off yet. I'm sure after the lower half of the intake manifold is loose, I'll be able to get it. I worked on it for about 2 hrs by myself last, taking my time.

ser_lover 06-04-2002, 11:37 AM That is one clean engine. Good Luck.
Crono1321 06-04-2002, 03:27 PM I agree! Your engine is NICE!! I have aspirations of one day having such a beauty.
jacen99SE 06-04-2002, 04:10 PM Eric, how did the leak-down test come out?
SERiousNiss 06-11-2002, 03:49 AM I had trouble with the knock sensor myself, I actually snaped mine. Had to learn the hard way. Luckily my boy had a spare motor laying around.
Just wondering also, did anyone hear of a sensor that can be used instead of the stock one? I heard of a sensor that had an alarm on. It would beep or make a loud noise when detonation occurs. Is this BS or there is such a thing?
Benito Malito 06-11-2002, 06:45 PM Yeah very clean engine. Puts mine to shame. You can polish everything now if you are inclined, and make it even more clean. Good luck finding your gremlins.
Jackson Diamond 06-11-2002, 07:02 PM You have just begun... To take off the intake runners you will need to pull the oil filter feed and return plate to get at two bolts, its a pain. But the knock senson connector is the same as the injectors. A clip holds it on. I broke mine and lost the clip  . So a zip tye holds mine on. Any other questions post em.
eric96ser 06-11-2002, 07:24 PM I ended up pulling the manifold and head together. I stuffed the injector and knock sensor harness between 2 runners. With the head off, I was able to undo the knock sensor. This is the 3rd SR20 head I have pulled. The first one was on a '94. The oil filter bracket must sit differently, because we left the intake manifold in the car. The second one was a '95(ProjectSE-R). We figured out the hidden bolt method, and removed the manifold with the head on this one also. On my car, I made sure to take off all the brackets that would get in the way. The bigger pain with John's car was the water lines under the manifold. I took the one going into the manifold loose, and left the whole thing in the car.
eric96ser 06-13-2002, 10:10 PM I got my new pistons today from Nismo Parts (http://www.nismoparts.com). I opted for the 10:1 to get a little more power. They were $38.10 each. Here they are.

eric96ser 06-20-2002, 12:27 PM I put the new pistons on the rods last night and honed the cylinders. To do this, you have to warm the pistons to 175deg for 20 minutes

and put the wrist pins in the freezer:

The mess afterwards :(

I'm lucky to have a wife that doesn't get mad when I make that kind of mess in the kitchen. She even helped by putting assembly lube on the wrist pins for me.

Did you personally hone the cylinders? If so what did you use. I thought I remember seeing a honing tool at autozone but I can't remember what it looked like and how it worked.

eric96ser 06-20-2002, 02:21 PM I had a mechanic friend do that for me. He used a bottle, or dingleberry, hone. After seeing it done, its easy to do. What did the one at AutoZone look like? This one had a bunch of small, gray balls on it. He put the hone in the cylinder, attached to a drill, and I sprayed WD40 in the cylinder. After a few seconds of it spinning, I sprayed more WD40.

I have seen one of those. Also, saw one that had 5 flat blades that attached to a drill. Like a big version of a brake cylinder hone IIRC.
Stiletto 06-20-2002, 06:08 PM eric, i am super jealous!! higher comp pistons and friends who will hone for ya. about yer wife helpin' w/ the lube...no comment. ;)
Eric, you have all the things in life I someday aspire to own:
- Flash flat-top 10:1 pistons
- Multiple SE-Rs
- A dishwasher
- Microwave burritos
Keep us tuned in.

ROTFLMAO!!! but you must make a compromise if you own a d/w or nuke 'em burritos...you can't afford to buy paper towels.
silverser99 06-28-2002, 02:57 AM How much power you think you'll gain by switching to the 10:1 pistons?? 5-10hp
