I’m getting ready to install a 91 intake cam in my 96 se-r and I’ve got a few question my crappy Chilton’s book left me with after reviewing the procedure. First the book tells me I must put all the cam bearing caps back on the cam bearing I took it off of. This makes sense but with a different cam going in how big of a deal is this (the 91 cam I have is in great condition). Second when I remove the timing chain gear how do I keep the timing chain from coming off the crank gear? Or is it necessary to remove the time chain cover to make sure everything is lined up?

Just follow the book and put the same bearing caps back on the corresponding cam. Tie a piece of string to the chain and secure it to something, just make sue you have everything in TDC just in case the chain drops off the crank..

Don't worry about the timing chain falling of the crank gear because it can't there is a little post casted into the timing cover that does not allow for the chain to skip teeth down there good thing Nissan made it that way. I've done this quite a few time, I've purposly tried to make it skip and it won't unless you break that casted little post, everytime no problem.
