: taillight painting help?
white96se 06-05-2002, 04:28 PM alright, well i just ordered my stillen bodykit, its on its way...and im also gonna do some minor body work also and one of those things is painting the taillights...i wanted to get them red and black like how they are done on the old jettas. the question i have is how do u do it, i heard all u do is just paint them, the bottom half i mean would be black and the red up top i would keep...is that all that you have to do? is it like spray paint or...any help would be great thanks. oh yea ill post pics soon when the kti is on and watever...:)
sage3 06-05-2002, 04:54 PM What I used to do is get transparent candy apple red paint from a hobby shop and it worked like a charm. But that was making the tailights all red. What ever you paint them be sure to use the transparent colors. I think it was around 2 - $3.00 a can.
eric96ser 06-05-2002, 10:20 PM 2 things:
#1 you will get more answers to this question at http://www.b15sentra.net . Painting tailights is dumb because it makes it harder to see your blinker or brake lights.
#2 Trim your sig down. I have to scroll down to see the enitre thing, its way too big. 3 or 4 lines is the max.
Thank you.
turbo b13 se-r 06-05-2002, 11:26 PM Dont do it! when the paint fades it starts lookin all ugly and you'll not want to paint it again. I did the same to mine and I just ended up sanding it all off to make it look back to stock...looks way better and sanding the paint off did not mess up my lights, they look good, after a little wax. Trust me keep em stock lookin....if not more power to ya.
Toolapcfan 06-05-2002, 11:37 PM If you're not goint to crack open the talilight to paint it from the inside (which would be a bitch although it would look nicer and last longer, assuming you could properly prep the surface) then I would just wet sand the lens with a really high grit wet sanding paper like 2400 and use a plastic prep type cleaner to prep it. Use an airbrush or a small paint gun if you can, spray cans don't have consistent pressure plus they're thinned out way too much. Like sage3 mentioned use transparent/translucent paint otherwise you'll get a fix-it ticket because your lights are obstructed and it'll look worse than ghetto. Once you've painted it I'd use a clearcoat to seal it. Once it has hardened you could buff it out with some Mirror Glaze and a buffer to take all the crap out of the surface but use a random orbit buffer or you'll likely burn through and that will piss you off. That's how I'd do it if I were going to but I'd probably only do it if I had spare lights to play around with, just so that if/when you run into a situation like Turbo b-13 se-r mentioned, you don't even have to bother taking it all back down to the plastic, you could just toss them. Just my 2 cents.
Soopastank 06-06-2002, 01:28 AM I used Candy Apple Red and my tailights came out just fine. Since the paint is Transparent your turn signal will still just as bright as stock. It'll just blink red. I will admit in time the paint will fade, but all you have to do is repaint them. Make sure to tape everything off well, and do many light coats to avoid drip marks. Be patient. As far as half red half black...just make sure if you do decide to do the black make sure its transparent. Or you won't be able to see your blinker. Here some pics of when I repainted my tailights.

Soopastank 06-06-2002, 08:08 PM I have the stillen front lip and rear section. I kept the stock SE-R sides. As far as the paint you can get it at any hobby shop. Its normal model car paint. Just make sure that you get *Transparent* paint.
jingjing 06-06-2002, 08:24 PM You could put a good coat of clear coat over the red to make it last longer.
white96se 06-06-2002, 10:40 PM alright thanks once again everyone...and ill also post pics when i finish the taillights...hopefully next week, ive gotta find a hobby shop by me
Tunez 06-06-2002, 11:32 PM A company called VHT makes all kinds of automotive paints. They do make one called Night Shades that is specifically for making your tailights look smoked. No where near as dark as tail light covers and it does take some of the "stand-out" look of the red/orange/white while hardly affecting the lights at night.
Here is an article on how to tint them.
Instructions (http://www.teamforwardmotion.com/tfmtech/n-body/appearance/tinted_lenses.htm)
As for the paints, just check your local parts stores.
Also, like it has been mentioned in prior posts, BE PATIENT!!! It is better to use several thin coats than to try and do one thick coat. If you do that it will run and look like ASS!:D
Serban 06-07-2002, 02:01 AM Painting them isnt the best idea...my friend used some tint spray for his taillights on his Accord, and although it was was transparent, it was really dark, and at night his brake lights were purple, during the day, you really couldnt see them. It wasnt until a few weeks later till he got a fixit ticket for them.
Tunez 06-07-2002, 03:25 AM If you follow the procedures listed in that link above you wil not have that problem. I have done a few sets with the VHT paint, it's good stuff.

Not to mention that it won't adhere to the plastic worth a shit either. :)
