The question pops it's head again. I'm after a JDM engine (10:1), hopefully before I hit 80 years, and am planning the buildup before I order it. I read the Sport Compact article about 22 million times about the different cams and it seams to me the Tomei street cams have a very nice power curve, price and idle. Has anyone here ever used them? I'm not too concerned about hardness as they would be cyro treated anyway along with new rocker arms. One of mine blokes has used the S3s for ever and he has been pretty happy. What to do...??? :)
So what say yea SR20 blokes?

Weill I would get the S4 cams. If you are getting a 10 to 1 JDM motor then it will have a little more HP than the US motor at 9.5 to 1. The S4 cam makes more top end HP over the S3 but looses a little HP in the mid range over the S3. S if we know that the 10 to 1 motor is making more HP than the US 9.5 to 1 then we can come to the conclusion that we would not loose any mid range or just a little when now using the combo of 10 to 1 and S4 cams. Thats my opinion, leave it or take it, its youe choice.

If you were to cryo treat the cams and the rockers you would just be waisting your money on something that is not a problem. The cam hardness and rocker hardness is just fine. As long as you change your oil every 3,000 miles with SYN Mobile One you will have no problems with wear. Wear starts with poor quality oil and lack of enough oil changes. The result is no oil going through the oil spray bars for the cams and hence no lubrication for rockers and cams.

Thanks Andre, I'll forgo the cryoing on the cam, but the reason I was thinking about cryoing the rocker arms is to give them added strength. I guess it's fair to explain that I am trying to build a more balanced power plant with a smooth idle and such rather then straight HP monster. This is why I had thought about the Tomeis. They seem to have more low to midrange torque and really only start giving up power to the S cams around 6,000 RPM, yet if I do the spring kit and raise my RPM up then I would be able to use more of the JWT S cams power band. The Tomeis are said to have a factory like idle. Blah blah blah... and on I go. :) Maybe in the long run I'll try one Tomei set and one S series set. Thanks again Andre. I do hear your advice and this may influence my choices over everything else.

They did a comparo on the two cams in scc a while back and according to the numbers, the tomeis made more horsepower.

AEBS is probly the best place to get them and its probly not easy i think they ar like 550 shipped for the ones that were in scc mag.. they sell more extreme ones too! those that beat out the s3's were 254 or 256 somethin like that where the s3;s are 260 they broke even with the s4's at topo end and beat them at the low end when they didnt lose any hp.... thats the mildest grind too! i wonder what their 264s 272s can do.... and how much they cost... AEBS's website should be up by the end of this month i hope..
