Just thought I would update everyone on the Limited Slip Differential for the Non-LSD transmissions. Some people have tried to get the part but have been given the run around by their local dealer. It is available but the only people with Nissan that know anything about it are Nissan Motorsports out in California. The dealer should have that number. My dealer quoted me $900 plus shipping. Part #38420RS360. With VLSD transmission part #38420RS365. This is also a good option for those with a VSLD that is not effective anymore. The differential is not a sealed unit so it is open to the fluid inside the transmission and is much less likely to overheat then the VLSD, which is a sealed unit. Also, KAAZ is supposed to have one coming out in 3 months for the VLSD equipped cars.

What type of unit is this if it's not a VLSD? Isn't a Quaife about the same price? When does the Kaaz come out? Why do I ask so many stupid questions?

This is a mechanical differential. It's supposed to cost only $750 but I think my dealer is marking it up. The Quaife is a non-issue because it is not being made at this time or in the foreseeable future:( . That leaves the KAAZ, which is adjustable, and all but it comes with 100% lockup so you would want to adjust it. And I assume it is only for the VSLD tranny. The Nissan one is the same design as the KAAZ it’s just already set up for a FWD car and it fits the non vsld tranny 98-99 200sx/Sentra SE.
So is this a Nissan made clutch type lsd? Are these performance units or are they supposed to be factory replacements? For $900 I think a Quaife would be a better deal for the people who have vlsd trannies.

this is an email message i read on se-r mailing list from mr. robert rood. i didn't ask him for permission to post this, but i'm giving him full credit for the research on this topic.
Hi all,
I just got off the phone with Nissan Motorsports
regarding the 1.5-way LSD Mike Kojima told us
about yesterday. Apparently, this LSD is not new
is the strict sense of the word. It's been around
for some time but hasn't been in the annual
catalog until recently. According to the guy I
spoke with, the 1.5-way has a 36 ft-lb breakaway,
is clutch-driven, and as Mike indicated
yesterday, is going for $750. He also mentioned
the fact that these are available for those of
you who have the open differential (e.g. 98+
Sentras, G20s, etc.) That's great news for the
open-differential folks as the Quaife unit
requires you to purchase the viscous coupling
part in addition to the Quaife differential - a
very expensive combination indeed. I should also
mention one of the disadvantages Nissan
Motorsports mentioned with this unit: It's not as
smooth a unit as the VLSD we're used to: It's
somewhat "clunky" when switching from Reverse to
First and it makes slow turns a bit awkward. If
you've ever driven a 4 X 4, you'll know what he's
referring to.
So...with all of this said, here are the Nissan
Motorsports part numbers:
With stock VLSD: 38420RS365
With open differential: 38420RS360
Nissan Motorsports phone number: (310)538-2610

The quaife is no longer available.
As for the other info. What I am trying to say is:
1) Your local dealer is not going to locate it unless they call Nissan Motorsports. Others have tried thru local dealers and when the part isnt readable available thru their network they thought they couldn't get it.
2) The clutch pack is open to the tranny fluid. This was not known for sure before.
3) It is similiar to a KAAZ which is going to be available soon as is probably a better option for those with the vsld tranny.
All that info from Robert was posted before and generated a lot of interest, but frustrations in trying to order said part.

They told me that we would need an order of 25 units. I was really counting on the Quaife for my car. That is why I have been researching these other options. It was my crying on the se-r.net that prompted Mike Kojima to mention this newer Nismo Diff. I still really want a Quaife :( :( :( .
