anyone ever get an alternator from a salvage yard. did it work,wasit worth it? just want to know im in desparate need and its only 40 bucks

I'm thinking about getting one and having it rebuilt. A friend of mine that's a parts manager for a nissan dealer tells me that the parts to rebuild an alternator costs around $40. He also told me that it's not quite a DIY project and if you've never rebuilt an alternator, then you should find somebody who has to help and walk you thru it.

If that works out beautifully, then a $40 salvage alternator + $40 in rebuild parts + labor = cheaper than $206 for a new alternator.

Another alternative is to get a low-mile used one from Andreas Miko in Miami. About the same money, IIRC. Mine has been on for almost a year now, and it has performed flawlessly.

Just another route to consider.
