mine may be bad, and i dont want to reinstall it if it is, since im going det, and dont want to mess with the pain of trying to redo it later. is there a way to test it?

I have never come across a way to do a full test with it out of the car. If it has about 100,000 miles on it, you can bet it has very few miles left in it. Parts are really designed to die within a very narrow mileage window. Take Porsche alternators as a great example. At 60,000 (give or take a few hundred miles) they die. In a kinder world we would have the parts that would last 200,000 miles + as they have been engineered and built before, but we can't have them. That would be less green for the big evil car companies.
