I am happy with my Hawker Genesis G16EP. If you have ever heard of the "Dyna-Batt",it is just a rebadged G16EP. Its a great deal, I got one off of gotbatteries.com

sealed lead acid, so you can mount it in crazy positions.

lyn, where were you when i was searchin' for a lightweight battery 4 months ago!?!?!! :(

man, i paid $90 for my miata battery from westcobattery.com and it weighs 25 lbs. the reason why i didn't buy the dynabatt...well...i didn't feel like paying $115 for a 13 lb batt. now that i see the hawker for $70, i'm thinkin' my batt might have to drain itself mysteriously....;) .

the only advantage i can see that my miata batt has is that it's a gel cell battery.

are there any cons with using a sealed lead acid battery??? or cons using a gel battery??? I want to replace my battery... I have 2 10" woofers and an amp (i'm not sure on the wattage, not tooo crazy), but is that an issue I need to worry about when looking for a new battery also?

Your sound system should not pose a problem at all. I have 1 12" Image Dynamics IDmax sub, Focal componets and am running two amps for a total of 1100watts. I have yet to have a problem, but then again I also have a 1farad capacitor. Your charging system should be good enough for 900-3000watts as long as you use a capacitor. Run 1 farad for every 1000watts.
To throw in my .02 there is a company across the pond that sells a 9.5lb. gell cell for about $95 USD. I know this is little help, but at least you know it is there.
Also try the search under light weight batteries. I'm not trying to sound like a dick or anything, but there was a good thread about them....try it. God I sound like an old member...

The WestCo is a dry cell battery, not a gel cell.

well i couldnt wait for any of the replies, seeing is i needed to get my car started so i can go pick up my new tires all the way across town before they closed. so i went to sears and got a Die Hard Silver. I paid $70 bucks including tax. I didnt have enough cash or the time to wait for lightweight battery. :( ,,, but I hope i'll be happy with this battery.

i stand corrected. i thought the absorbed glass mat material was like a gel.

If you guys had the choice would you get an optima and put it in the trunk, or get a light batery and keep it under the hood?
i would like a light battery in the trunk, but i dont think it would be enough to push that power through the extra 15' of cable

I'm going to be putting my WestCo in the trunk. I even have a box to install it in. It should be available soon. :D

traditionally if you're drag racing a fwd car, you'd want as much weight over the drive wheels (without adding to the vehicle's gross weight) as possible. but being that the miata batt and/or hawker batt are smaller in size it's better for space saving (the CAI tends to rub on regular batteries). the only thing w/ putting the miata batt in front is you'll have to make a custom battery tray. or create a way of using the stock tray w/ some sort of tie down.

Um.... So? ;)

There's a lot more to racing than drag racing. :D

For anything but going in a straight line, relocating the battery helps to favorably redistribute the weight.

yeah, i guess i coulda done the politically correct thing and stated the benefits of relocation...in case you like turning your steering wheel while doing 65+ mph.

I have been wanting a Dyna Bat or Westco.
Was going to get the Westco because of the cost of the Dyna Bat.
Thanks for the tip on the Hawker. Wow Westco price and Dyna Bat weight.
Ordered Hawker this morning:)

Heh, no Problem! Cheaper than a CF hood, and more weight reduction than one too! Now, if I only had to balls to remove my AC....

I am dying to remove the AC but it would be killer to remove something that works, i cant wait till it breaks.

This has everything to do with choosing the appropriate power wire. Use a very large gauge (2 or 0), actually just buy the battery relocate kit and it comes with everything you need. As long as you don't use the wrong cable, there will be no problems getting the power to the front of the car.
