I know the piping in your turbo exhaust system plays a role BUT what effect does the muffler have on performance numbers?

example:

2.5" mandrel bent piping with stock b15 muffler

vs.

2.5" mandrel bent piping with say an Apexi 2.5" muffler?

Im not talking about sound at all, strictly numbers.

On a turbo setup a straight through muffler is a must especially on a 2 1/2 inch system. Your not going to want a whole lot of backpressure when it comes to a turbo setup and the stock muffler will provide a lot of backpressure which will rob you of a few ponies.

I can tell you , with the T25 BB in the G20 , we had a Trust cat back , and between that and a 3" crush bent system with 3" N1 ... It was night and day !! Big time lag with the Trust and a huge power difference, made boost ALOT sooner and ALOT more HP with the 3" system !!

absolutely... the more flow the better, plain and simple.

I plan to do a dyno someday of just downpipe and then w/ a "catback" 3" exhaust to show what difference it can make.

so you made more power with a crushbent vs mandrel? i thought its supposed to be the other way around

I should clarify, I have a b15, if that makes a difference since the muffler is different than b13/b14's.

a lot of mufflers are universal... also if your going turbo, go 3" not 2.5.

turbo systems spool quicker with a less restrictive exhaust system... also 3 inch mandrel bent to a 3 inch muffler will get you spooling the turbo faster but also brings up the torque #s earlier then with stock exhaust system..

the more restrictive your exhaust system is on a turbo car.... the more races youll probably lose against a car with same mods but w/ exhaust

also TRUST/Greddy SP'S arent made for 3 inch turbo systems.. it has a 2.5 inner diameter muffler so it will be like shitting out a door knob.
on the other hand

GREDDY POWER extreme has 3inch inner

A bigger diameter exhaust, although crush bent, will still outflow a smaller diameter exhasut, mandrel bent. A larger diameter, mandrel bent exhaust would be net peak results.

Just cause its crush bent, its still a considerably bigger hole = more airflow

stock b13/honda civic/integra mufflers have like 1.5" tailpipes only. somewhere around that number, so if you were to run a 2.5" mandrel piping to a stock muffler, it is basically the same as running the stock exhaust system. the exhaust system is only as good as it's smallest opening...
