: $350 for starter???
mismo42 06-12-2002, 05:54 PM Is $350 a reasonable price to have a starter replaced??? Seems kind of high to me. The mechanic didn't call me with a price before he made the repair and that was a little more than I was expecting. It better be new for that price.
enjoyDride 06-12-2002, 05:57 PM Dude a rebuilt would cost you about $75, installation is piece of cake..free$..but if you do take it some where, yes $350 out the door sounds a bit on the high side.

Dswtflip4u 06-13-2002, 07:23 AM I wouldn't say the installation is easy on a 96 B14 SER . IT is a PITA to do with those brackets on the way from the lower intake manifold. I paid 250 bucks for mine OE nissan.

NXBen 06-13-2002, 01:23 PM Clean it up and replace the brushes. It cost me about $35 and I was told you can get the brushes for cheaper. Sure beats $350.

sakerocket1 06-13-2002, 01:51 PM I can do mine in under 15 minutes without getting to dirty. piece of cake.
Dswtflip4u 06-13-2002, 02:07 PM the starter??? you have a b13 or b14?

enjoyDride 06-13-2002, 02:21 PM Starter- one person easy / 2-people easier..but still a piece of cake..Dswtflip4u..let me know when your starter needs replacing, I can use an xtra $250..

Sr20kidD 06-13-2002, 03:03 PM did you end up paying.. i wouldnt think you would have too.. due to the fact that he didnt call you, i think he is ripping you off.
Dswtflip4u 06-13-2002, 04:47 PM I replaced my starter myself so I don't think I need help on doing so. I paid 250 for the starter itself coz that's how much it normally runs for OE nissan part starter. If you do your research about starters, you will know what I am talking about. There are two different units for SR20 starters. There is one Mitsubishi and I can't remember the other one. I had problems with my starter when it started to squeal. Enjoytheride, you still didn't answer my question, do you drive a b13 for a b14? This make a whole hell of a lot of difference taking the starter out. The low port motors have a big bracket at the back covering the part where the starter is. The braket holds the lower intake manifold. It is very hard to work the starter out of the crimp space. This is a pain because there is really not much room to work back there. This is the same problem people deal with when taking the lower intake plenum/manifold. This is why you have to take the bracket off. If you don't have a b14 platform sr20de, I don't think you have any room to talk to me about how hard it is to replace a starter on a B14. Again I say a b14 not a b13.
enjoyDride 06-13-2002, 05:05 PM I'm going to say this once, open your eyes and look at my sig- last time I checked a 92' XE is considered a **B13** right!! No body said working on a car is going to be easy...live with it!! you said.."If you do your research about starters"..I say-The other type of starter is a Hitachi unit..and dont talk to me about tight spaces..My N20 kit is not visible to the eye-why because I worked it into a "crimp space"..Stop your fucking bitching..it's not hard like your making it seem...end of story....
Enjoy--

dude,
honestly have you ever replaced it? Im not saying its mad hard but its not easy, it takes some monkeying ability to do. Harder than an alternator and most things on our car.

All am saying is it is not a walk in the park. Did you see what you said that "it is a piece of cake." I am just trying to prove a point to people that really haven't worked on their car.
Chris Garrison 06-14-2002, 02:11 PM I AGREE WITH DSWTFLIP4U WHEN HE SAYS THAT ITS NOT EASY I DID MINE BY MY SELF AND IT TOOK ME 3 HOURS JUST TO GET THE THING OUT! I HAVE WORKED FOR NISSAN AND HAVE SEEN THE HOUR RATING ON A B14 STARTER, 3-4 HOURS, AND THATS A NISSAN TECH! I WILL PAY SOMEONE REPLACE MY STARTER IN 15 MIN. AND PLEASE DONT GET DIRTY WHILE DOING SO!
sakerocket1 06-14-2002, 03:12 PM First I have a nx2000 I did say it takes fifteen minutes but mine has also died 3 times in the last 150,000 miles. first time I did geet dirty and monkey mechanic skills got it out in about an hour, The last time I did it it did take under fifteen minutes. And I didnt get dirty. I dont know how different a b14 is but b13's are cake once youve done it. all I was saying was save some money its not to difficult to do.
