: Hit and Run!!!

Damn it. So I come home from work yesterday and I noticed that someone hit the front left side of my car. It's mostly cosmetic damage, no dents or anything so they hit it pretty lightly and just scratched alot of paint. The thing is, I had the car parked in front of my girlfriends house all day and the previous night. Plus she lives in a court so you know there isn't much traffic through there. So we looked at some of the neighbors cars to see if any of them had damage, and guess what, the house across the street had a van parked in the driveway with YELLOW paint on the right rear bumper!!! I measured the height of the mark on their bumper with the damage on my car and they were the same height of 22". Being that I only have one way coverage, I know I have to go after them to get money. Well I went to the police station and filled out a report. When I finished, I asked when someone would contact me and they said they wouldn't. I was confused. Essentially he said that if no one witnessed it then I had no proof even if the neighbors car had yellow paint on it. Is this true?

So today I plan on approaching the neighbor to see if I can get them to admit fault. I'll let you know how that goes.

Well, this might be a little overkill and would require a little up front money BUT if he did deny it and you are sure it was him then:

scrape a sample of the yellow paint from his van and get a sample of yours. Ask a local lab if they could analyze the two and determine if they were the same or not. Its probably a good idea to call the lab (maybe forensic) first and see if they could do this and what it would cost. Obviously with this method you are taking the risk that it is different paint or that the lab cannot conclusively prove one way or the other.

Probably overkill, but just a thought.

Yah I was thinking about that after watching those FBI files shows on discovery channel. I'm hoping that they just fess up and give me some money. I'm sure I couldn't get more than 1000 from their insurance anyways.

BTW I took digital pictures of everything.

Damn bro, that sucks. Your car is nice, too! You have the yellow NX with the postert wing, yes? That ride is nice. I hope they fess up. At least it's not worse...

thanks. yah the damage wasn't too bad but still someone has to pay for it and I don't want it to be me. We'll see what happens but maybe now would be the time for a different look. who knows? :)

That sucks man. What the hell is it with people
who have to manuever their cars by "feel"!?

Can the scratch be buffed out? If it is minor
I would just fix it. If it can't be easily
fixed, its good that you took pictures and
filed a report. Going to such measures helps
your case if you have to go to small claims court.

In my younger foolish days I had some neighbor idiot leave a dent in my SE-R. I knew it was him because of the paint and angle of his door when
opened. I was pissed and swung my door and left a
dent for him (and his vehicle was nicer). I won't say that is the right thing to do but it felt good at the time.

Anyways, good luck with it.

i know the feeling.
some guy cut across an intersection on his push bike, dodged a 4wd and plowed straight into my passanger door. got his details but wasnt willing to cough up the aus$500 for the door. chased it up for bout 2 months but he dissapeared.
no point claiming for that much so i had to cough the money up my self.

it was more of a pain in the arse than anything else

Did you try "testing" the paint on his car with a flame thrower? I hear that works great. :D I had a similar thing happen, but it was a family member. Hard to hide from that.
