What is the point in having a door that opens to the outside, with the hinges facing outside? Someone could remove the pins and just take the door off the wall.

You cannot take the pins off the security hinges without using a sawzall or something. Take a look at your local highschool or Costco with the outswinging doors and notice that the pins are bucked on both ends with a drift pin located on the inside of the hinge. If you're gonna carry around a battery powered sawzall, I'd just go through the wall instead. Anyways, how would you design an outswinging door with hingepin on the inside?

C'mon now, don't you think someone would have already thought of that? ;)

Nah, I was just wondering why the door seemed to be backwards. Now that you explain it, it makes sense. :) I guess I've just never paid attention to outward swinging doors before.

Update 11/17/07:

Light at the end of the tunnel is in sight. Got a call from the garage door fabricators and we're probably gonna be installing the week after Thanksgiving. Why the delay? We have no paved driveway....yet! The original demo and foundation guys came back in full force to start doing my new driveway with brick and soon to be poured concrete.

In the meantime, we had a chance to check out the Big Bore Bash at Willow Springs a weekend ago. Here's a shot of Dan Luckow's fastback....this car was doin' 1:31's around Big Willow and fending off former NASCAR road race cars.

Crappy underexposed shot of brick patterns being laid and they will serve as forms when the concrete is poured.

Today's shot of the dirt being compacted and rebar being placed. #4 rebar 20" O.C. with a 4-5" thick concrete pad. Say.....what's that little black post doin there?

A shot of the new stairway and landing for the entryway into the addition.

For those who were curious about the addition, here is the tile 90% done in the shower. Got the countertop for the tub and the bench in limestone too....we were lucky to have it fabbed as one piece with no seams.

Here's a hint for that little black square thingy in the driveway. I went to IMS yesterday and picked up some tube and some 3/16" hot rolled plate, welded it together, and sprayed some epoxy on it while it was still hot. Its a 24" long piece of seamless with an ID of 2". Had to do it at a friend's house since his 220 and MIG were handy.

Next up (hopefully), pics of the pour and my garage door.

Update 11/21/07

So right before Thanksgiving, everyone was rushing to get things done. The water main had to be trenched deeper and around the driveway, tile guy had to get a few last things in, painters had to finalize paint, etc.

The biggest thing to happen this week was the driveway pour. I've never had a level driveway before, let alone a level garage surface. I woke up extra early to make sure all the rebar was sitting on chairs and propped up a few inches before the truck got here. Pumper truck and mixer came early since everyone wanted to get the weekend started early as well.

So onto the pics...

Here's the scene right before they fired up the pumper. Notice that the bricks serve as forms and they were soaped down to make sure the concrete didn't stain them.

Pumping, pouring, and screeding...

Starting to float the surface to a "light broomed finish."

Today after 24 hours of cure and me wetting it down every so often.

Garage door guys came in early this week to install the tracks for the roll-up. They'll be coming back on Friday to put in the door and we also waiting on our gate too.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Looking nice I'm assuming that is a two car? It just might be the pictures but it looks like two might be cramped in there.

Yeah...its planned as a medium sized two-car. Its the biggest I could fit onto the property without having to buy the house next door! Space will have to be maximized as much as possible. I'll try to fit all my work surfaces to the rear of the garage and my toolboxes have their own dedicated nook. Roll-up door and an outswinging door save on valuable floorspace. All my tube bending, cutting, grinding, and torching will happen outside (that's what the embedded 2" receiver hitch is for). No benches on the side so I can open doors as wide as I can. Welder will be in the space to the right immediately past the garage door opening. That's why the 220V outlet is there.

Even with all of this, I'll still have to move a car outside to properly work on a car with doors open. But its worlds better than what I used to have! Its a compromise, but with SoCal weather, alot of work can be done outside.

BTW, where's the lift going?

Now I'm rethinking my first plan. I was initally going to have a two post on the left side of the garage, but then I came to the realization that I wouldn't be able to open the driver's door well and it really forces me to ALWAYS use the left bay as a lift bay only. In other words, I could never put a car smack dab in the middle of the garage. So I'm pricing out a four-post with casters. My dad used to have a 4-post in his shop, so I'm used to jack trays and bottle jacks. A plus is that I can get a good corner weight with a drive-on rack than with just jacking and lowering. There's a possibility that I could fit three cars in the garage with piece of mind in earthquake country too.

Thanks for looking!

I hear you. My parents' neighbor has a 3 car garage wth 3 lifts. Bastad... :D

Would the 4 poster be the drive on type, or would it still have arms underneath so you could do suspension work from it?

Looks like I'll be ending this thread soon! Woohoo! Painters are going crazy doing the inside of the house, so we had to move almost all of our furniture into the garage for now. Also, they'llbe refnishing the hardwood floors too, so I have about a month of incubating the bed, sofas, etc in my garage. :(

So here are the shots of my roll-up door. Its a 120V automatic, keypad and remote. No power to the garage yet, so I had to use the chain to crank it up and down. Good workout.

Here's a shot of the available light when the door is closed. Love the skylight. Never could see how much light it let in until I could close off the garage door opening.
