i know i know, this has got to be the most asked question in the history of SR20's. but here it is again!MOOHOOHAHAHHAA

heres my dilemma. ok i loooove turbo cars. they sound so nice and are soo fun when the boost kicks in:D but heres the thing, if i go turbo, i want to do it right and worry free. i was thinking about going BB DET. id want Jay whitely or JGY to install it.( both are a shitload of miles away but i want somebody good to do it).
the bad thing is is that this is soo expensive. with the engine, intercooler, boost controller, turbo timer, guages, exhaust, ecu, etc. and install( no offense to Jay or JGY, ive seen both of your work and they are worth every penny!).
All i want is a very Fun Autocross/Street car. i think a BB setup w/ the stock t25 would be very nice for this. it would be alot of power in autocrossing. though i wonder what class they would put me in. my plan if i go turbo is to get the BB det and while im saving up the money for it( it will probably take me several years, or a lifetime) i would leave the engine alone expept maintenence and would try to put a Ground control suspension in it with AGX's. and GC camber plates. i dont know how much the turbo swap will run me, hopefully the Gurus will help me on that. i just want a good reliable setup that is installed right.
Now on the other hand, if i stay N/A, heres what i will do. i will go hotshot headers, pr cai, JWT S3 cams & ECU, 2 1/4 exhaust, and the ground control setup listed before. and i would love to try to get a stroker kit. ive read that JWT is supposed to have one come out and the rumored price is around 2700. but who knows.
But all in all, which would be better. for a daily driving Autocrossing MONSTER. But a monster that can be handled easily. but please all you turbo gurus that have det's flying out of your ass all day long :D help me figure out with the costs and everything. i know a little about turbos, but not as much as some people, and thats why im asking for all your advice. and plenty of autocrossers help here too, as i am dying to start. i think im going to start autocrossing as soon as i get my license! woohoo!:D thanks so much for reading this and please help. thanks a bunch, later!

I may get some flack for this but IMHO a turbo is not well suited for an auto-x car. You are either waiting for boost or spinning your tires. Neither of which result in good times. Your best bet for an auto-x car is the linear power found in a well built NA motor. Either way you'll be classed in Street Modified.

I visited some friends running at a local FLRSCCA event this past fathers day. Times ranged from 28-38 seconds and each participant got 5-6 runs. A painful reminder why I prefer to spend my money on open track events. These guys got 3 minutes of seat time and spent the whole day out there. No thanks. I'm off to Mosport this weekend for 4-6 hours of track time.

I second that. Drivers license should be your FIRST mod. :D

I also recommend when taking your Driving test at the DMV, to use your NX and pull a wheel out of the parking lot and at every stoplight! The instructor will already have your license filled out;)

hehehe. i agree. i know i know. 8 more days!!!!:D then im ROLLIN

It's a hell of a car to learn in

hehehe, you forgot fun as hell too!!:D :D :D

hmm, i kinda agree with the autocrossing deal. its kinda better to have a NA for that. because of lag and all that. and t25's dont lag much at all, but its still there. with a n/a car all the power is just there basically, more so than a turbo car. i dunno. i think the whole turbo thing is way over my head. its kinda like a big dream. im just kinda trying to get a plan on what i want to do with my car. i dont even have a job yet( trying to get one, i reeeaeally want one). first thing on my list is to try to score some b14 ser rims, which i might be able to get from a fellow friend.( not naming him because the wheels are mine, all mine!!:D ) hehe. but i dunno. which is more fun? turbo is kinda crazy fast, but na is just na. its just alot of fun. and then i think a loud exhaust while autocrossing on an NA will make everybody watch me in my state of grace with my all powerful SR20DE.( damn, i should be a poet:D ). so what do the rest of you guys think? hehe. later!

I took my license test and a stupid fat b*tch failed me because I supposedly made 2 wide left turns. She goes, " Your the best driver i've had for the day! Just Practice on your left turns." So i'm thinking that I passed untill I got the recipt which said 40 points which equals a failure!! I could not belive it! I was so pissed off that I filed a complaint with the DMV, but no reply.

My first mod is a choice of DET's that my father have sitting in his shop:p. Most likely it will be the BB det but i'm pushing for his spare GTi-R. I May be the youngest kid with a sr20-turbo soon.

Keep ya head up Jimmy, you'll get there some day.

I disagree with the auto-x comment. I've auto-x'd around 6-7 times or so NA with POP, header, exhaust, cams, ecu. I haven't auto-x'd with the turbo yet, I can can say that with the t25, there is virtually no lag; the only time I notice lag is in 5th gear at 2000rpms. The power onset with the t25 is very linear and controllable. 2nd gear is a blast! The tires will spin a bit at the top of 2nd gear (I do have a FMIC and S3 cams with the turbo on a stock compression DE, so I should be making more power than a stock DET right:) ) but that's only if I'm flooring it. I think a DET car would make the perfect auto-x car. Just enough power so that you haul ass but don't spin the tires (in 2nd where you spend most of your time) and there is no lag in the lower gears.

If you go bigger than a t25, you might run into power issues (too much!), and driveability issues (boost hits hard), but the t25 just makes the motor seem more like a 3.0L V6 stuffed into the engine bay.

I'd highly recommend trying a t25 car out in an auto-x environment.

Wouldn't any car have lag if you punch it in fifth gear at 2K rpms? Turbo or not? I don't know about SR20's but, my GA16 isn't worth a shit under 3K and 5K is getting aweful close to the Torque/HP equilibrium point and shifting is going to give you more go. Granted, the higher torque and hp numbers with an SR20 over my GA16, but I still wouldn't expect that in fifth gear at 2K rpms to be tapping into any power. Even if a turbo was spooling up the gearing would be too high I would think. Just thinking out loud here.

I don't think most turbo set-ups will handle the rigors or auto-x, though the DET in stock form has the best chance. I think the VE is better suited towards auto-x as there is just less to go wrong. This is especially if you are in the desert or high heat areas.

I think if any car is set up correctly, then they can handle an auto-x. Over here in Austin, Beth Mclure (I think that's how you spell it) won the SCCA solo II nationals in a RX-7. There's another guy here that spanks everyones butt in a TT Supra.

Lots of people road race turbo cars, which I consider even tougher on cars, without dire consequences. You may have to upgrade your cooling system but that's not a totally difficult job.

With auto-x and road racing though, you have to be careful in turbo selection so that you get the correct driveability, but I think that's the only major concern.

With our cars in particular, you do have to worry about the tranny though...

very good point there on your post spdRacerUT. i like the SR20VE's, its just thier really expensive and then thier relatively new in the swapping world with our cars. right know im kinda leaning torwards just bolt ons and a well set up suspension. it should be a fun car. right now though i really just want to get my license. i have to take a test at the DMV too because my birthday falls on a spot check day. and i got a frikiin B in the whole drivers ed. lifes a bitch. o well. i just want a loud ass exhaust and have all these v8 people shit thier pants. god do i hate V8 trucks. i hate trucks in General. :D

I wouldn't even worry about the turbo for a while. I've had my car since I was 18 and now I'm 23 and I finally got around to it. I did most of the bolt-ons and the suspension first. When you do the suspension, make sure you do it right; no cheapin out or your ride will suffer. The suspension was probably my favorite mod. Nothing like carving around twisty roads (assuming you have twisty roads to carve around).

I don't want to be a downer here, but I wouldn't do too much to this car for about 6 months. Most teens/beginner drivers get in an accident shortly after getting their driver's license. I know I did :( as well as a lot of my friends/relatives. Its a proven fact, and I am not being mean by any means. It will just happen. I said it wouldn't..it did...twice in the same year. Now I am a better driver and am more apt to handle a car. I sincerely hope you don't get into an accident, but the numbers say you will. Of my many friends at school, only ONE has yet to have an accident.

i agree with you crono. i really hope im not one of those statistics either. because in such a small car like mine with bigass trucks everywhere, i may be lucky to get out alive if i get in a wreck. its a scary thought, but i wanted a small car and knew that i would be taking the risk of that. i think im coming a little to my senses too, im gonna get really used to my car before i go crazy. im gonna take the autocrossing real slow too. i think im going to hit it hard next year. im just gonna try to see what its like this year. i think im going to not buy anyhting for a while and save up all my money and try to buy some B14 wheels with tires from a friend if he sells them in the future. thanks alot to everybody on the input. theres been alot of good advice.
